autoethnographies on female faculty in academia are limited [2, 11]. This researchgathered autoethnographic stories from three female faculty members in engineering, the authorsof this paper, who had also experienced gender bias in their teaching. This was then organizedinto a ”collective autoethnography”. The analysis and writing-up of the project were alsocompleted by the authors. According to Ellis’s autoethnographic principles [8], stories are centralto this paper. The literature presented and the emotions evoked after the stories are told is all doneto change the understanding of what it means to be a female instructor in the engineeringclassroom.The three authors of this paper are early-career faculty in small teaching-focused institutions.Two of the

Several strategies have been implemented to improve this culture, for example byestablishing peer mentoring programs [11] - [15] or creating more inclusive classroomenvironments [16] - [20]. In contrast to undergraduate engineering students who predominantlytake classes, however, senior doctoral and post-doctoral engineering students spend the majorityof their time in a “lab” environment—i.e., the environment of the research group, whethercomputational or experimental. interesting in both Teresa and Christine’s narratives are what is omitted from the pitch.Christine was not singularly focused on chemistry or engineering, as her narrative suggests. Infact, she also enjoyed writing – so much so that she actually dual majored in Technical Writing.She tells me that the reason she didn’t pursue writing as a career is because she couldn’t see anyviable career options, whereas in engineering, there were plenty of job opportunities. of fall 2018 had over 2000undergraduate students enrolled [8]. Although overall the university enrolls more undergraduatewomen [9], this is not true for the college of engineering. As reported in 2016 only 24% ofundergraduates and graduates seeking engineering degrees at this university were women [10]. A search of the literature was conducted using the ERIC database, and 89 peer reviewed,academic journal articles published in the last 15 years were found to be relevant to the currentstudy. To be included as a relevant study, the focus had to be on factors influencing women’sdecisions to major in engineering and/or gender differences in influences to choose anengineering or STEM major. She received her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Virginia and her research focuses on the fate and transport of biologically-active organic contaminants in agricultural systems and water reuse in agriculture. She is a faculty fellow of the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska and maintains a courtesy appointment in the Department of Environmental, Occupational and Agricultural Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. , stereotype threat, andfeelings of isolation, which can undermine their confidence and engender a fixed mindset [2][3].Such gatherings inspire women that they can be successful in pursing satisfying careers in atraditionally male-dominated field [4]. They boost women’s confidence, help them buildnetworks of peers and mentors to help them navigate difficult situations, and encourage them toassume leadership roles in changing the face of computing and creating transformativetechnologies [5][6]. Although not as well known as GHC, the ACM Richard Tapia Celebrationof Diversity in Computing (often just called “Tapia”) serves similar goals as GHC but for allunderrepresented minorities in computing regardless of gender.1 Tapia highlights the critical
