results were summarized in [29] as follows. A majority of the respondents thought that theirpromotion was a result of their hard work alone. Half of the respondents indicated that theirprogress might have been easier if they were male, and half of them stated that children were ahindrance to progress. Female students were largely prevented from pursuing higher education until the 19thcentury. Before then, female seminaries were the primary alternative for women who wished toearn a higher degree. However, women’s rights activists fought for higher education for femalestudents, and college campuses turned out to be fertile ground for gender equality activism [30].In the early 1900’s, at the University of London, all degrees were available to

connected to the bus with minimal pins needed for each sensor. Theprotocol works by sending a start condition (S) from the Pi to one of the sensors, followed by thedevice address. The address for each sensor is a unique, seven-bit address that is written usingbits one through seven. This is used to identify each device that the Pi is powering [12]. The Pithen sends instructions in the bit zero to the sensor so that it knows to collect data from itsenvironment, allowing the Pi to read from the sensor, and the sensor sends a message back to thePi acknowledging its instructions before data is read from it. As shown in Figure 1, when the Pihas received all of the bits and it is time for it to read data from a different sensor, it must send astop

that threaten the success of Launch Lab exist. Since there are minimalrecognition and compensation incentives for many of the members, Launch Lab projects areoften a lower priority relative to a member’s other work. Finding the right student(s) for a projectcontinues to be a challenging task. The group sometimes struggles to align the skillsets, interests, and availability of students with the needs of the project outcomes. With such a diverse group, communication remains an area of ongoing difficulty as well. Whether it is between members ofa project team, across the various departments, or even externally, miscommunications orinfrequent communications are often the critical stumbling block to success. SuccessRetention and student success data in the College from the early 2000’s indicated that first-timestudents who placed into Math 1110 (Algebra II) were much less likely to be retained to thesecond year and to ultimately complete their degree (whether from the College or from anothermajor at WMU) than students who entered the College placing into at least MATH 1180 (Pre-Calculus). Further refinement of the retention data showed that students achieving a grade inAlgebra II of lower than ‘B’ were even less likely to complete their degree successfully thanstudents who completed Algebra II with a ‘B’ or higher (a ‘C’ or higher is required by theMathematics Department to proceed to Pre-Calculus). Based on these observations, starting in2013, a separate

, but go a bit further. At this level of effort, instructors should create originalexaminations and multiple versions of them. Many teachers who teach the same courserepeatedly, reuse their same tests each semester. Certainly, this does save time, but in this ageof total and digital communication, this should be considered a certain invitation to ‘cheat’. Tosee how easy it is to find old exams online, just search for ‘where can I find my professor’s oldexams’. Online forums can also be found that defend this method of ‘studying’ because5|Pageprofessors should know that their past tests have been digitalized for anyone to see. “If theprofessor thinks you cheated, then s/he is very naive about how the world works. Objective 7: “Ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives” received an average response of 4.85. This is an important survey question as it directly relates to ABET student outcome 5: “ability to function on a team.” 1 4. Objective 9 had a low rating of 2.46 suggesting students felt that member(s) in their own group did not equally share in the workload. Written comments suggested that this may be due to the complexity of the parts

responsibilities, and reward them for their contributions, or,would we want to fire them? We use weekly work logs, group reports in class, peer evaluations, and communications as evidence. Interactions with students are important as well – faculty andproject managers take into account how receptive students have been to comments, how self-motivated students have been to take on tasks, do students and groups complete work on time, and what level of task(s) students have taken responsibility for. A main lesson learned forstudents with respect to this aspect of the course is to take ownership. For some, it means takingon leadership or positions that are outside of their comfort zones. For others, it means steppingaside to let others do their share of the work

5. Students have access to external expertise and critique3.2 Course objectivesThe course has been designed to meet several specific educational objectives. Among others, bythe end of this course, students should demonstrate their ability to • Research, develop, analyze, and apply knowledge from across disciplines to formulate and recommend solutions to open-ended problems under time and budgeting constraints. • Understand, analyze, and evaluate issues of relevance to the project—and identify specific and diversified audiences to incorporate their perspectives and needs surrounding the issue(s). • Define measurable, realistic, deadline-specific objectives that are appropriate to the project/problem
