after the last lecture of the day. This allowed students to connect to thematerial asynchronously if needed and to review lectures to assist with comprehension. DuringFall 2021 the ‘somewhat liberal’ policy with the deductions listed above was continued.During Spring 2022, the deadlines were still presented as fixed, but the deduction for late workwas quietly dropped for students who communicated their need for an extension prior to thedeadline. Students who turned things in without communicating before the deadline had theusual deductions. The need to communicate with the instructor prior to the deadline wasemphasized at several points during the term. In addition, a personal email was sent to eachindividual student midway through the term. If
ExperienceAbstractInstructors have long emphasized the need to involve students in their courses. Studentinvolvement has been strongly linked to student motivation, engagement, satisfaction, andlearning. Drawing from Astin’s Student Involvement theory, this mixed methods study measuresthe effects of choice of activities on student experience and learning via control and interventiongroups. This study leverages mandatory teaching assistant training to conduct this researchwhere the Fall 2022 offering is the control group, and the Winter 2023 offering is theintervention group in which graduate students are offered choices in their activities. An onlinesurvey was conducted via Qualtrics to gather student demographic details and data on theirengagement and satisfaction

, Engineering Connect aims to impact the persistence offirst-year engineering students by providing instructors with a framework to deliver academicsupport within the cornerstone engineering courses. Moreover, Engineering Connect strives toincrease the dissemination of academic support information to students; to increase the exposureto and utilization of existing services and programs available to students at the university; and tocultivate a culture of belonging and a culture of equitable support for all. 2. Methods The Engineering Connect program was piloted in a Cornerstone Engineering Designcourse in the fall 2022 semester. As a first-year engineering course, Cornerstone EngineeringDesign provides students with a foundation for
is worthwhile to assess whether these methods still offersubstantial benefits to students moving forward.Purpose/Hypothesis: This pilot study assesses student perceptions of a HyFlex course model, with a focus on whether the HyFlex format allowed them to better handle academic and non-academic responsibilities.Design/Method: A course perception survey was given to students in two introductory-levelengineering courses and one junior-level technology course that all used a HyFlex course modelin the Spring 2022 semester. Students were asked how frequently they attended class in-person,via Zoom, and via video. They were asked to what extent they agreed that the HyFlex formathelped them meet course, other academic, family, work, and health
Canvas (due to campus-wide adoption of Canvas to replaceBlackboard) to do the same in Spring 2022 and Fall 2022. It takes time to set up such enhancedmulti-part problems on Blackboard or Canvas, but these problem sets are reusable, and thestudent responses are positive. This paper describes how to create such multi-part problems withrandom parameterization on Blackboard and Canvas, and presents the evolvement of studentperceptions from Fall 2019 to Fall 2022, to reflect on the impact of the pandemic.IntroductionActive learning is proven to be an effective pedagogy to improve student performance [1], wherethe students may be engaged in problem-solving, experiential learning, teamwork, a flippedclassroom, or other learning modalities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that engineering jobs are paid thehighest average starting salary compared to other industries or occupational groups, with amedian annual wage of $100,640 (from the available data as of May 2021) [4]. People with aB.S. in Civil Engineering earn a mean entry-level salary of $59,892 and annual wage of $95,490,suggesting they can sustain a reasonable quality of life immediately out of college. These years were selected because the former course, 2018, featured a “proto IE” versionof the course and the latter, 2022, featured a full “transmedia IE” version of the course thatfeatured dynamic visual and audio components. Our analysis was formulated as a parallel mixed-method approach that made use of courseworkgrade and open-response data provided by

also point out the variation among those who educate in engineering (tenured/tenure-trackfaculty, graduate students, and contingent/adjunct faculty), which is not always acknowledged.By not paying attention to such variation, the impact of work done in engineering educationresearch may be limited. In an effort to illuminate these variations, we report on research thatexplores some details of the educator experience. In this paper we ask: what does it look like tobe an educator working to adapt an existing curriculum for a new term, in our case a curriculumpreviously taught in Autumn 2021 and adapted for use in Winter 2022? Broadly, the curriculumwas a 10-week seminar titled Dear Design: Defining Your Ideal Design Signature where
Figure 4: Response to survey Question 7 versus Final Exam Problem Grade In addition to the survey, the grades from the Markov chain question on the 2023 finalexam were compared to those on the almost-identical problem given in 2022. (See Appendix forquestion details.) Out of 15 possible points, the students in 2022 averaged 9.68 points with astandard deviation of 4.36. In 2023, the students averaged 10.46 points with a standard deviationof 3.69. Though the difference in grades between the two years does not rise to the level ofstatistical significance (𝑝 = 0.14), it is hoped that with more administrations of the course in thefuture, and therefore more data, a significant difference will be seen.Future Changes Overall, the

In the fall 2022 semester, students taking the course with a traditional gradingstructure were given the survey three times: week 6 (after the first exam), week 11 (after thesecond exam), and week 15 (after the third exam and before the final exam). The next time theclass is taught, in fall 2023, the class will be taught using MBL. These students will be given thesame survey at the same intervals
