design) and designintegration and presentation. The students learn how architects and engineers work together inmulti-disciplinary teams to complete a building design project. The course is assessed each yearthrough course assessment plans, course assessment reports, student course critiques andprogram graduation surveys. Quantitative and qualitative assessment data are presented. Itsupports multiple ABET student outcomes and criteria. Students rate it among their favoriteundergraduate courses. More importantly, it prepares them for their future roles in designing andmanaging real building projects. Keywords: ABET, architecture, civil engineering, engineering design, interdisciplinary, BIMIntroductionUndergraduate civil engineering programs

in career planning activities, with a focus onacademic pathways to prepare for STEM-oriented careers, implemented by the school counselingdepartment. We hypothesize that this intervention will help support students’ abilities to seethemselves as STEM people (i.e., identity) and support students’ future goals in STEM.The student cohort will be drawn from enrollees in a federally funded program called TalentSearch. Talent search programs have a primary goal of increasing post-secondary schoolattendance among economically disadvantaged students. Our plan is to provide a model forconnecting middle school STEM education and Talent Search program activities to raiseawareness, interest, and the pursuit of STEM Careers. It is expected that this

mission and goals.Next, the students spent several weeks drawing the existing building in a building informationmodeling software program, while also completing a thorough building code study. Studentswere tasked with completing a building design that was both functional and aestheticallypleasing. Students also had to develop a one word concept, which could be seen in alldimensions of the project. Figure 2 provides an example of a concept board, as created by onestudent.Figure 2: Example of Student Conceptual WorkOnce the students completed a building code study, to ensure code compliance, the class metwith the community partner to present preliminary color plans. practice plan reading. The main motivation for instructors to incorporatethis software in their classes is to expose students to technology they will encounter aspractitioners, especially significant since contractors view these drawings as a legal descriptionof their scope of work. Therefore, the production and interpretation of the documents requiresthat they exhibit a high level of accuracy, specificity, and clarity. This paper focuses on the use of Bluebeam markup and grading in architectural engineeringcourses to enable communication between faculty and students during the iterative structuraldesign process. The paper provides sample student hand calculations, sketches, and CADstructural drawings with Bluebeam markups provided by practitioner

This also enables students to learn the tools of the software, become familiar witharchitectural and construction methods, and understand details employed in the design andconstruction of residential buildings. The first project is in the format of a tutorial where studentswork on constructing a single family residence which comprises of a basement, first floor, andsecond floor. Students are also to interior design the kitchen, bathroom, and office on the secondfloor. The second project consists of the plan and design of a single floor for a single

The course materials were shared through the Moodle LMS. At the end of the courses, the student received a final comprehensive PDF coursepack of the materials. The introductory lecture courses were commonly taught in a classroom and the capstone coursewas taught in a design studio. The classroom capacity was about 45 students with the typicalclass size either 18 or 36 depending on the number of sections. The floor plan proportion wasapproximately 1½:1 (width:depth). This paired with force diagrams and images of real-lifestructural scenarios helped make the connections between loading principles and theirapplications. These exercises are described in Table V. the beams. Despite this, prompting the students to think about shear failure in this context improved their understandingof this topic. It should also be noted that a few students commented in the survey that theywished lecture had provided more guidance as to how to layout reinforcing prior to beamfabrication. While the request is understandable, the variety in reinforcing configurations alsoadded a creative component and a wider sample of results. This would not be the case iflectures had a more prescriptive approach to reinforcement for the lab. The individuals thatrequested this may have brought down the score for lecture preparedness slightly, but the overallscore was still strong and there are no plans to modify this approach in future
