Surveying and Estimating, and the CM Capstone course. ©American Society for Engineering Education, 2023Using Conceptual Cost Estimating as a Constraint and Tool in DesignCurriculumAbstractArchitectural firms use simple unit/area-based, pre-design budgeting to develop/confirm projectscopes with clients. These budgets are created based on project history, plus the knowledge oflocal site attributes and contingencies associated with the specific project type to be designed. The typical budgeting models used lack specificity and do not address enough variables for atypical pre-design budget requirement. , instructors haveintegrated a second phase of the design challenge into a studio course. The two-phased version ofthe challenge has provided an opportunity for the authors to study the student work developedbefore instruction, and the influence of design critiques and feedback on the results of the secondphase. The Design Days challenge for 2022 was for students in groups of 4 to design a piece of outdoorfurniture for a given site on campus. Student teams were tasked with building a full-scaleworking mock-up of their design using limited supplies. At the end of a 48-hour design sprintearly in the term, student teams presented their mock-ups to panels of professors and industryguests to receive feedback. One month later, the project was reintroduced to

changes to anarchitectural engineering program in the Midwest. Responses were collected across 52 closedand eight open-ended items to gain an industry perspective on the relative importance of coursetopics in the curriculum, the selection of Architectural Engineering (AE) degree concentrationoptions, the format of graduate degree capstone projects, and the factors that AE&C employersconsider when hiring graduates and experienced employees. The curriculum changes inspired bythis survey are presented together alongside the program’s previous AE curriculum to morethoroughly characterize the program attributes that are desired by the AE&C industry.IntroductionThe Architectural Engineering (AE) program considered in this study is at the

, and use engineering judgment todraw conclusions. The breadth of this requirement may be achieved by wide varieties of pedagogicalapproaches. Regardless, the core challenges facing students are: recognizing the actual problem, developingpotential solutions, applying experimental methods, understanding the significance of appropriate datacollection, and ability to execute engineering judgement. These outcomes is often realized in labs and upperlevel courses once technical knowledge is solidly mastered. Mapping learning outcomes in the architecturalengineering program, we recognized the need to institute a disciplined inquisitive mindset early on,therefore, establishing the foundation for future advanced coursework. The resulting project known

design and construction projects [1]. Many AE graduates areconfronted with these fragmentation problems in real-world construction projects, such as poorcommunication and lack of cooperative consciousness or experience [2]. Compounding this, the problemof fragmentation also exists in the education field that leads to certain consequences and a cyclic educationdeficit problem. Studies from researchers illustrate that most engineering students were taught technicalknowledge via isolated and, thus domain-specific courses with limited to no teaching of integratedapproaches. This limited educational focus causes a lack of knowledge and experience in collaboration forstudents entering the workforce [3]. Moreover, the education model of the AEC

, colors, textures, and plants into the built environment. This project aims to highlight the importance ofbiophilic design in architecture and how it can be incorporated into interior architecture.IntroductionIn 2007, for the first time in history, the population of people living in cities surpassed that ofpeople living in rural areas [1]. In 2050 it is estimated that 75% of people will live in urbanenvironments [1]. While this is good for nature because people moving out of rural areas willallow nature to take back those areas, but for people, this means spending less time outdoors [1].It is estimated that people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors [2]. Being in a naturalenvironment has many health benefits [1], [2], [3], [4]. Biophilic

become familiar with and learn how to apply these sustainabilitystandards to the projects. In order to facilitate this, the US. Green Building Council (USGBC)has developed the LEED Lab program to provide this opportunity for students to becomeinvolved in a real-world project and practice sustainability during their education. Ball StateUniversity is one of the few universities that is offering LEED Lab to undergraduate studentsthrough which two campus buildings have been certified to date. In this course, students becomeinvolved in the process of certifying a campus building under LEED Operation and Maintenance(LEED O+M) for Existing Buildings. The purpose of this course is to provide a chance forstudents to gain hands-on experience and improve

unique in that it is one of only avery few programs in which the ARCH and ARCHE programs exist in the same school. Ourprogram focuses on professional practice of building design and construction, and the interactionof the students in the two majors is a precursor to what they will encounter upon graduation andentrance into the professions. The programs are currently structured such that students take manyof the same courses at the start of the curriculums, before dividing and concentrating on thecourses that make their majors unique. At the end of the curriculum, the students come backtogether in the capstone design course, where they act on interdisciplinary teams to arrive atsolutions for a semester-long building project. types of courses may not be able to deliver the intended learning outcomeseffectively [4]. It is reasonably expected that many institutions and students will face limitationsin attending conventional classroom settings in the foreseeable future. One pedagogical shift toaddress this limitation is to leverage innovative technologies that to date have been utilizedprimarily only for research projects. Using Digital twins is an innovative technology that utilizesdigital representations of physical objects and processes such as buildings and their systems, hasthe potential to transform remote learning by providing simulated hands-on experiences that aresimilar to those used in in-person settings.A digital twin is a virtual representation of a real

visual study tools ratherthan traditional reading-writing methods. It is important to consider that through the application of different teaching methods theknowledge can be further approached. In architecture, it is necessary to make relationsbetween theoretical aspects and concepts with much more practical and technicalapplications. Thus, the requirement of having a broad comprehension of topics and therelations between them is fundamental. Through mind maps, graphic relations can be madebetween the several topics covered on a course. Visual tools can help “clarify the relationshipbetween material objects and concepts to understand” [3]. The critical challenges faced byan ArPM (Architect Project Manager) are ‘poor planning,’ ‘unfamiliar

Recycling, reducing waste, minimizing negative and maximizing positive impacts arethe goals for sustainable design.Sustainable development education is the journey of sustainable life and work and deals withchanging environmental conditions [7]. On the other hand, education enables students to thinkand act independently and understand the application of knowledge. In recent years, manyprofessional organizations have agreed on the need to incorporate sustainability into engineeringeducation, and the need for sustainability engineering education has been widely recognized.Reflecting the concept of

Itis important to mention that even after the classes resumed in our campuses during the 2022terms, students keep on demanding courses or at least some sessions of a course in an onlineformat. We consider that a good model for Architectural Engineering courses should include a mix ofactivities, including the use of models in the classroom, some videos or documentaries fromfamous structures or construction processes, some collaborative activities or small projects tobe solved in teams of students and also, some online sessions in order to develop some digitaltransformation competences in our students. Other disciplines within the Architecture andCivil Engineering programs are already

Through its first two years of implementation, the course invited practicingprofessionals to present unique projects in building design that excited students about their futurecareers. Since then, the AE Seminar course has also served as a gathering place to address theundergraduate AE student body with important announcements, reminders, and opportunities.Often, instructors also recognize recipients of student and design competition awards to helpfoster a student culture of achievement, excellence, and celebration of others. Merely manipulating or altering others’ images through digital or other processes does not in itself constitute legitimate appropriation, and may qualify as copyright violation. 4. Attribution of uses of others’ creative work is essential, and can be handled in a number of ways: – In presentations summarizing research or precedent analysis, any representation of source projects should be accompanied by identifying information (building, location, designers, date). Students should also be aware that rights to photographic imagery are also often held by photographers independently of the source project’s designers. – In cases in which
