competencies developed in chemical engineering(CHE) programs has grown. To adequately address this problem, the authors’ goal is tosynergize industry-student-academic integration by enculturating classrooms with connections toindustrial realities. Implementation of this model is particularly important in the early years ofthe curriculum. As the first step, the authors are working on designing and incorporating up-to-date industry problems as assignments in a course on “Materials and Energy Balance”. Theauthors have been working with industry mentors from various areas of the chemical engineeringfield to design up-to-date application-based problems/projects for the selected CHE class. Twoindustrial mentors with different areas of expertise were

We chose the Katzenbach and Smith teamworkframework, and the related teamwork performance framework developed by Davis and Ulseth(2013), to evaluate ChemE Car teamwork. We contextualized this model with details salient tothe specific ChemE car teamwork context, to develop an observation rubric and interview scriptfor data collection in this study. We have interviewed a few students, and preliminary data showevidence of high success in team relationships while team joint-work products can be improved. The results of this study will be used to develop methods for ChemE Car project managers tooptimize their laboratory time to

The goal of the project was to encourage creativity in science. The framework was adesign with a theme of sustainability. The authors opined that creativity is often connected to thearts. However, connecting ideas and recognizing similarities and differences are also consideredcreative endeavors. One definition of creativity is “the use of the imagination or original ideas.”Another definition of creativity is “a phenomenon whereby something new and valuable isformed.” Finally, on the initial rubric, creativity was

Additionally,hands-on projects in a first year engineering program have been shown to improve retention [6,7]. Therefore, this redesign focused on two factors known to be important for student retention:improving a feeling of belonging [2] by providing continuity of contact with the department andcontent and by including hands-on, active learning in a first year course [6, 7]. While the content development of the biodiesel-based laboratory was completed in 2015,several other factors influenced the timing of the first offering of the course. replaceexams with projects, so that the major assessments in the course better aligned with authentic problem-solving practices.Figure 5: How similar students found section problems compared with exam problems. Conclusions:Overall, we see that students liked the section problems better than typical homework problems and foundthem more helpful for their overall learning than regular homework problems. However, students foundthat the section problems did not align with how they were assessed in the course. Overall we see somegains in problem-solving throughout the course, but we cannot attribute this gain to the section problemswithout a control group. However, it seems plausible that students did get more exposure to ideas aboutprocess safety in this

Institutional Setting and Program IllustrationFollowing a 2016 curriculum revision, the CBE Department at CSM has provided a new requiredsophomore-level course: Computational Methods in Chemical Engineering (CMCE), which isoffered simultaneously with MEB as a corequisite. The main instructional goals of the CMCEcourse are to provide students with exposure to the computational tools used throughout the latercurriculum in course projects and assignment calculations, as well as to provide limitedinstruction on programming techniques (flowsheet generation and coding), a dedicated course forwhich had been absent in the curriculum since 2002
