After the introduction assignments are due, students arestrongly encouraged to look through those of classmates on the discussion board.Homework assignment 2 (safety training) is required for all, and the research laboratoryinstructor may require safety training well in advance of the deadline for Homework 2. Thesafety training includes the Lab Safety Training session offered by the institution’s Environment,Health & Safety office, which is required annually for all students, faculty, and staff conductingresearch. Depending on the lab, the laboratory instructor may require safety training beyond theEH&S Lab Safety Training program. All students, whether working in a laboratory or not, mustalso complete the

recommend continuing use of learningcommunities in the future. The method for forming communities depends on whether the courseis first or later in the department sequence, and may also vary for flipped versus lecture-basedcourses. We recommend using software like CATME [10] for first courses and flipped courses, while we recommend using seating preferences in later courses and lecture-based courses.Reforming communities mid-semester depends on the need for getting to know more peers andon the type of course: flipped or lecture-based.References[1] M. After this time, sample solutions for the problems were made available to all studentsthrough the LMS, and the LMS would not permit new submissions past this time. The source of problem sets varied through the courses – some problems were designed “fromscratch” by the instructor(s), some were assigned directly from the required textbook for thecourse, and some were recycled from previous implementations of the course. On average, roughly one third to one half of each course’s problem sets were brand new the year they wereassigned. The three years’ worth of the Introduction to Chemical Engineering and Chemical EngineeringStatistics courses were structured the same

such as fugacity and kinetics, onetechnique to make the theoretical challenges more approachable is to present the concepts morevisually, given the general preference of students in STEM for visual learning. As such, thisresearch study focuses on the creation, compilation, and analysis of chemical engineering comicsgeared towards K-12 students. Comics have become increasingly more prevalent as visual learningtools, with a long history of their educational potential dating back to the 1940’s, so they could beused to help guide more students into chemical engineering without the stigma of the field beingtoo complex.A series of comics was created displaying how chemical engineering is found in everyday commonapplications, including chocolate and
