Service learning projects such as this one are contrasted to the steel bridge andconcrete canoe projects done as part of the ASCE student competitions. This paper aims toconsider the development and management of a service learning project for the civil engineeringcurriculum. Several example projects are listed along with their relation to various civilengineering courses. Additionally management suggestions are presented. focused on undergraduateeducation with a small M.S. program in Civil Engineering. The typical cohort of full-timefunded graduate students in Civil Engineering is around 3-4 per year. In the undergraduateprogram, each student in the junior and senior years has to take two clinic credits per semester.In each of these four semesters, the students work on industry or grant funded project. The project the team selected was the conceptual design of a performance and visual art center for an existing nonprofit “village” that houses physically and emotionally abused girls. Each team member was responsible for the design of a component of the project based on her civil engineering subdiscipline. This paper describes such an approach using the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure(ISI) EnvisionTM rating system as part of a learning module in the capstone design course at theUniversity of Utah. In the module, students are first presented fundamental sustainabilityconcepts and tools, and in a separate seminar are introduced to the Envision rating system.Students are exposed at least two more times to brief follow-up discussions applying Envision totheir project.
