It was observed that students indicated that classes they had taken (89%), internshipexperiences (61%) and personal experiences (56%, including non-internship work experience andbackground knowledge) positively impacted their problem solving processes. For classes taken, civil engineering classes including senior design, geotechnicalengineering, and water-related civil engineering courses as well as class design projects werementioned as helping students familiarize themselves with the ill-structured problem solvingprocess. Students stated that in their classes they had been given an ill-structured problem whichhelped them learn the problem solving process (eight students, 44

American Society for Engineering Education, 2020 Building Bridges – Spanning the gap between the classroom and professional practiceOne of the ABET Inc. civil engineering program requirements is for the curriculum to preparegraduates to design a system, component, or process in at least two civil engineering contexts.Additionally, ABET Inc. requires the curriculum to include a culminating major engineeringdesign experience that incorporates appropriate engineering standards and multiple constraints, and isbased on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work. While there are various ways toaccomplish these requirements, many programs use a capstone design project or experience. Thepaper outlines how the civil engineering program at

This paper presents the construction of a steel frame sculpture withdetailed beam to column and column to footing connections. This frame was constructed as astudent project completely on campus. American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)motivates faculties and students nationally to design and built a steel sculpture for theiruniversities by providing construction plans for them. Although the authors used AISC’s idea tobuild the steel sculpture, the sculpture presented in this poster is not built the plan provided byAISC. The assignment was given to 35 students across 7 teams. First, students individually scored their projects for a subset of the criteria - teams divided up criteriaamongst their members so that at least two people would score each criterion. Next, studentsdiscussed their individual responses with team members to arrive at a set of consensus scores, with written justifications, for all 14 criteria. We reviewed students’ responses forappropriateness of scores and quality written justifications as part of the structural and

whether that is simply sketching a deflected shape or describing failuremechanisms. Rather than passively experiencing structural element or system behavior throughpictures, videos, simulations, and small-scale projects, full-scale testing provides students with afirst-hand, lasting understanding of fundamental behavior. Additionally, students also gaininvaluable perspectives often difficult to glean from traditional classroom instruction such asconstructability and tolerance issues. Full-scale testing is essential for student understanding ofstructural engineering concepts and there is a significant need for well-organized experientiallearning opportunities with appropriate scales that successfully illustrate structural behavior.
