applied to two case studies. In theeducationally-focused CE case study, a senior capstone design course in environmentalengineering worked on a project defined by a community partner. The rubric did a good jobrevealing where improvements in the project could have been realized and demonstrating that thenon-profit facilitator was instrumental in engaging the community. remediated forPCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), an endocrine-disrupting, persistent pollutant. Testing forPCBs in the river water was important as PCBs may be transported and pose a risk to communitymembers who recreate and fish for sustenance in the river. Through an undergraduate researchexperience, a total of 48 water samples were taken from the Mill River around Ball Island andone upstream control. Samples were analyzed using GC-MS (gas chromatography–massspectrometry) after a hexane extraction following ASTM D5175-91. Mass spectra wereevaluated in comparison to known standards to determine whether PCBs were present. PCBlevels were below detection limits (0.14 to 1.10 ng/L) for all samples. Gibson completed her M.S. from the Colorado School of Mines as a member of the inaugural cohort in Humanitarian Engineering and Science (HES). In the HES program, Gibson specialized in Environmental Engineering and conducted research under the NSF-funded ”Responsible Mining, Resilient Communities” project in Colombia. existing modeling course, a modulewas developed leveraging a research project that employed community-engaged design to createthe world’s first parametric insurance product protecting the livelihoods and food security ofartisanal, small-, and medium-scale fishers in the Caribbean. In this article, we report details ofthe content of the module as well as assessments of student learning and feedback from studentswith regard to the value of the module to introduce concepts of community-engaged design. Inparticular, these results are discussed in the broader context of the United Nations SustainableDevelopment Goals, specifically the five Ps – partnerships, peace, people, prosperity, and planet.IntroductionThe criteria for accrediting engineering
