over three semesters, as opposed to thecollege’s traditional two-semester curriculum. The integrated approach used collaborationbetween one semester of Engineering Design Methods (EDM) and two-semesters of the SeniorDesign Project (SDP). The integrated approach, modeled on the engineering design spine withroots in freshman courses, involved both the EDM and SDP cohorts. The interclass involvementincludes participation in design review presentations, senior-to-junior mentorship, and multiclassworkshops. Student feedback through periodic surveys and interviews provided insight into thestudents’ progress and learning outcomes. students’ motivation toward design changes between their freshman and senior year,specifically in their cornerstone and capstone design courses.The goal of this study is to determine if motivation is correlated to student performance in designcourses. This study uses longitudinal methods to examine a single cohort of students at thebeginning and the end of their undergraduate tenure at Florida Institute of Technology. The initialobservation is completed at the beginning of the students’ freshman year, during their Introductionto Mechanical Engineering course. Model Canvas. The Design Canvas classifiesrepresentations by actionable questions on two axes—system development and design choices—which in turn are organized hierarchically by scale. In the technical analyses, students in a sophomore level Fluid Mechanicscourse worked in teams to analyze the material balance tables and pump sizing specificationsproduced by twenty Capstone Design groups. assesses competencies in system design, implementation,project management and documentation. Each competency is evaluated on a 1 to 5 scale,representing skill levels associated with a Pre-Engineer, Trainee, Intern, Entry-Level Engineerand Professional, respectively. The competencies were assessed using freshman, sophomore andsenior capstone design courses in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University ofIdaho. The data show that the scores improved consistently from freshman to senior years, withthe largest increase in system design skills, followed by implementation, project management,and then documentation. The projects selected were a traction systemfor femoral fractures and a manual cast-cutting device. A quantitative longitudinal studyof students in a mechanical engineering program collected data on design self-efficacy,makerspace involvement, and user demographics through surveys conducted on freshmen,sophomores, and seniors. The study happened in an upper division project-based engineeringprogram which is part of the extended campus of a medium size public university in theMidwest. The course had a total of 28 students and 17 of the 28 fully participated and consentedto the research. Each semester the students in the program are placed on vertically integratedteams, meaning first and second semester juniors (J1s and J2s) are working with seniors (S1s andS2s), and assigned a project of the scope and scale of a typical capstone project.
