Those labs, with the exception of Lab 5, werealso completed by another undergraduate student during the summer of 2011. Feedback wastaken directly from the students as they worked through the lab experiments and the labs wereadjusted based on that. apparatus is a challenge due to typical budgetarylimitations. In addition, the apparatus designed by companies specializing in educationequipment may not exactly reflect the educational objective intended by the faculty. Theseobstacles had forced us to seek and search different venues to acquire experimental laboratoryapparatus for demonstrating heat transfer principles. We concluded that such an apparatus can bedesigned, developed and constructed “in house” within a manageable budget. This can besuccessfully accomplished by taking advantage of the capstone senior design project andASHRAE Undergraduate Senior Project Grant Program. The fullday session included FLATE-guided brainstorming sessions, presentations, and a panelshowcasing exemplary women in STEM careers. Major themes of collaboration, encouragement,and leadership by example emerged from the qualitative data collected in an online survey fromteachers. In general, the bridge circuit is used to detect small changes in theresistance of any of the resistors, which is reflected as a change in the output voltage. Thestudents are asked to derive the expression of the output voltage, Vo, as a function of the inputvoltage and the Wheatstone bridge resistive network, which contains the thermistor. The studentsare encouraged to refine their expression into the fewest terms possible to make MATLABprogramming and downstream design much easier to handle. offering due to time/hardware limitations. On the otherhand, OFDM modulation is still studied extensively during the lectures. Results in Table 2 showthat gain in OFDM modulation is only 28.5%, which is considerably lower than other technicalconcepts such as synchronization and channel estimation, and may have been improved via ahands-on lab experiments. The concept of MIMO is covered only briefly in the lectures, andthere is no lab experiment associated with this concept. This is also reflected in the lowimprovement (17%) in students’ learning perceptions on the topic of MIMO systems.
