consequencevalidity. Construct validity is how well an instrument measures a construct, and whether thatconstruct is measured with sufficient depth. In this study, we show this type of validity throughadapting and developing multiple questions per construct, aimed at measuring different aspectsof how those constructs were originally defined and consulting experts whether those itemsmatch the constructs they were intending to measure. Finally, further construct validity is shownthrough factor analysis. Content validity is how much an individual’s responses to certain items reflect theconstruct the items intend to measure. Unlike Alejandro, he did not see a disconnect with engineeringand the work that he is doing; rather, he wishes that his formal engineering education could havebeen extended to include developing interpersonal skills and business skills to enable people toleverage their ideas and pursue their goals. By comparison, second-year chemical engineering studentsretained this tendency to reflect on vicarious experiences; however, their perception of theexperiences illustrated a gradual shift from seemingly competitive comparisons to comparisonsthat led to feelings of camaraderie and the formation of peer support networks. Arguably, this process is a large part of engineering, but it’s not the whole picture.≠ Bailey and Gainsberg: One limitation of this study is that it does not encourage engineers to significantly reflect on their practice and why they do certain things, it is more objective. The voice of engineers does not significantly appear to factor in. The study does not aim to suggest improvements to the education of engineers; it simply reports that engineers learn some things in a university setting and some through practice. terms of performance, we did not find a significant effect of the quiz mode on studentscores, when the quiz was administered in class. The only exception was when the quiz wastaken at home (b), in which case the mean score (Mquiz=7.41/8) was significantly higher thanall other modes (F=23.78, p<0.001). Although the quiz was open-notes, open-book in everycase, we believe there is an apparent effect of stress when the quiz is taken in a classroomenvironment that immediately affects student performance. However, we do not claim thatthe higher score reflects greater learning gains and more investigation is needed for a safeconclusion. discussed how the semester was progressing, any areas of struggle, andgoal setting. A number of students described that having a peer mentor was helpful. As onestudent commented, “it was comforting to know someone was looking out for us,” and anothercommented, “[as a STEM transfer student] the mentor knows exactly what we are going throughand can give suggestions from [the mentor’s] perspective.” Several students also described thebenefit of goal setting and having the opportunity to reflect on these goals. on our data to answer this question, when asked to reflect on thechanges that have occurred, many interviewees remark that faculty today do pay greater attentionto undergraduate education, and participate in more regular, if not always continuousimprovement efforts both at course and program level. Indeed, individuals from many differentinstitutions, regardless of position or institutional rank, mentioned that conversations in thedepartments and colleges that were stimulated by an ABET visit were helpful. (This said, manyinstitutions still rush to compile their ABET data two to three years before a visit.)
