The students are exposed to digital circuit design using discrete 74xx seriescomponents during the first four weeks of the semester. For the rest of the semester, all designs aretargeted at FPGA. The use of 74xx series components has been kept in the laboratory for two reasons.First, a 74xx series component might be all that is needed for a simple design. For some students this arrangement maybe inconvenient, or in some cases, impractical. Furthermore, there are many challengesassociated with teaching electrical engineering online courses because of the interposition ofheavy equation use and interactivity required.Over the past three years, we have been investigating the use of inexpensive, highly portableinstrumentation to facilitate our lab requirements. Particularly, nine simulation labs and twosimulation projects were used in the class of summer 2020.In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the designed simulation labs and projects in helpingstudents to grasp and then apply the control concepts and ideas, surveys were conducted in thesummer 2020 class to collect students’ opinions and feedbacks. Among the 27 participatingstudents, 81.4% of students “agree” or “strongly agree” that simulation laboratory exercisesincreased their interest in the subject, 85.1% of students “agree” or “strongly agree” thatsimulation laboratory exercises helped them better to learn course content, and 77.7% of

Students in the program typically take two engineeringcourses per semester from the on-site faculty supplemented by distance course offerings asneeded. Each of these courses has the same content as the ones offered at the main campus,including laboratory work and semester design projects. Courses in Math, Science, English, andthe Humanities are offered by the local two-year school.
