students’ academic careers.IntroductionThere are several studies which detail the benefit of student collaboration and networking [1],[2]. However, there are not always adequate opportunities for students to network andcollaborate with other students and faculty outside of their home institution. Therefore a summerprogram was developed by the FEEDER (Foundations in Engineering Education for DistributedEnergy Resources) Consortium, in hopes to not only increase the ability for students to networkand collaborate, but to expose the students to a wide variety of technologies that they could notsee otherwise. This strengthens several of the soft skills that are very important in thedevelopment of a young engineer’s career, but are often times

rules set forth by the professional organization whichsponsors the international competition the craft is designed to compete in. Students are allowedcomplete autonomy during the design, construction, and testing phases and all participatingstudents are encouraged to attend the competition. The MTSU EVP solar boat project epitomizes the spirit of innovative teaching and learningstrategies. In addition to offering students a unique opportunity to enhance their technical skills, and soft skills and gain solid resume and portfolio building experiences, participation helps themto stay engaged academically. Dedication and enthusiasm are at their highest when people areengaged in work they find stimulating and are rewarding. Here the reward comes from

describing design-centric engineeringprojects (DCPs), which we have developed and are in the process of refining. Our DCPsemphasize context-oriented, design-focused coursework, with a strong focus on teamwork andcollaboration. We feel that development of professional “softskills and design expertise areachievable through project-based learning (PBL). Our development efforts draw from the currentpedagogical literature on PBL, particularly that pertaining to electrical and computer engineeringeducation.7–10 We are especially interested in efforts related to electrical power engineering.11, 12 Page 26.1515.2For PBL, instructors introduce a relevant

; providing the following feedback. “Overall, based on responses to text-entry questions, the interns reported experiences that were beneficial in two key areas: work experience and education. Interns and fellows were able to gain valuable technical/field-related experience as well as experience in business areas not available to them in the classroom setting. This included professional networking, project management, and soft skills. They were able to leverage the experience to secure other non-SEIP internships or to gain full-time employment in the industry. Interns/fellows also indicated that the program enhanced community awareness around energy issues.” 11When the interns (n=215) were asked, “To what extent do you feel that

progress of a new technology to revenue generation.A sound appreciation of the interaction of the technology maturity parameters can assistcareer planning and develop the soft skills students should seek to acquire through their Page 22.15.9degree program. The assessment tool provides an easy-to-use map for technologydevelopment as well as a simple way to quantify what has to be done and how it can bemeasured. It can be applied both to incremental technology and to the most novelconcepts.Bibliography 1. National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap, US Department of Energy, November 2002. 2. within their academic year.• A major benefit to students was the development of project management skills, and gave them an opportunity to see how all the pieces of a project fit together such as the procurement of equipment, the scheduling of activities, dealing with outside vendors, and how to manage the coordination of multiple project teams. Students especially learned about Page 12.1563.9 contingency plans and what to do when something did not work as intended• “Soft skills” development for students was a major byproduct from this project. These included such things as true collaborative

and manufacturing sectors, restructuring theutilities, smart grid, and low-carbon economy require graduates with a broader understanding oftechnology, economics, social contexts and skills [1-5]. There are growing recognition of theneeds to improve, restructure and reform electrical energy and power engineering curricula. Theissues surrounding this theme are receiving significant interests form faculty, industryprofessionals and often administration. Electrical energy professionals are required to havesignificant scientific capabilities, deep interdisciplinary understandings, and soft skills, e.g. self-learning abilities, communication or interpersonal competence. However, how and which are thebest approaches to better educate the next

The latter sponsors CIVIS, a Center forResources in General Education established at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez (UPRM)campus to provide a new perspective in general and STEM education [6]. CIVIS, which means“citizen” in Latin, brings together faculty from Business Administration, Arts and Sciences,Agriculture and Engineering in order to develop interdisciplinary activities that further theuniversity’s mission of shaping productive and committed citizens.
