Institute launched a project to enhance engineeringdepartments’ existing practices for meeting the SARI requirements and educatinggraduate students in ethics. The lead author of this paper interviewed graduate program coordinators from nineengineering departments to explore the following topics:1 1) The department’s current approach to educating graduate students in ethics; 2) The types of ethical issues graduate students in the program should be able to address; 3) Major challenges and perceived needs for enhancing graduate ethics education in the program.Interviews were conducted in the Spring semester of 2015. Inparticular, it is not known how emotion and intuition actually influence ethical decision-makingof engineering students.In this work-in-progress paper, we present preliminary results of our exploratory investigationabout how emotion and intuition permeate engineering students’ experiences with ethics. Weanalyzed 11 interview transcripts, which had been collected as part of a larger longitudinal,mixed-method research project with engineering students. In the first phase of the project, we utilized phenomenographyto develop a comprehensive framework, grounded in the lived experiences of engineers, thatdescribes variation in ways of experiencing engineering ethics. This study pertains to theproject’s second phase, wherein our objective is to identify factors that potentially influencedchanges in ways of experiencing ethics.
