this paper believe that this is an important aspect in theestablishment of the field and should have been included in Fensham1’s characterizationbecause without adequate funding, high quality, rigorous research is unlikely to happen. Inthe U.S., the National Science Foundation (NSF) began funding STEM education-relatedprojects beginning in the late 1980s-early 1990s. The current budget for the Education andHuman Resources directorate in the NSF is nearly $1B per year (for all of STEM, not justengineering) and there are other funds available for EER within the NSF that are not includedin this overall amount. One could argue, that EER in the U.S. emerged primarily because there was a steady fundingstream available to support people who wanted to

initiated in 2009 by the Viterbi School of Engineering at University ofSouthern California. The goal is to leverage the emerging pedagogical and technologicalinnovations to enable students around the world to engage in collaborative and interactiveengineering learning across disciplinary, physical, institutional, and cultural boundaries. Usingmodern eLearning technologies enhanced by Telepresence capability over the Internet, studentsfrom different universities attend the same class in person at networked iPodia classrooms ontheir home campuses to learn with their classmates around the globe. iPodia students learntogether from the same teacher(s) with similar course syllabus and content materials, and theymust follow identical academic requirements

petroleum engineering and industrial engineer may take these courses abroad. However, thecourses will not be approved for mechanical engineering students to take abroad. Facultymembers have been very supportive of accepting the international courses as electives and onedepartment is looking to revise the curriculum to create an ideal semester for the students to goabroad, should they choose to use the semester long exchange as their method of accomplishingthe international requirement. The WCOE will be working with the other engineeringdepartments and degree programs to rework their 4-year curriculum plan to identify the idealsemester(s) students should participate in a semester-long study abroad experience.6. . The results presented in this paper are part of a longitudinal study in which surveys willbe administered to cohorts in their first, second, and third years of engineering. Future researchwill include comparing international and domestic students’ experiences from various cohorts intheir first, second, and third years of engineering. Additionally, we will be able to track studentsfrom one cohort from their first to their third year, in order to determine if and how internationaland domestic students’ perceptions change over time. As is well-known, the enormous success of the German economy is duepredominantly to the success of the numerous small and medium size high tech andmanufacturing companies, which may not be as well known as a Bayer, BMW or Siemens, butwho are leaders in certain niche markets. They have proven to be excellent hosts for ourundergraduates since they have a strong interest interacting with them and integrating them intotheir company life and culture especially if they have an employee championing the internshipprogram because s/he is an alum of the IEP. , ethics is the study of “what it means to do theright thing”. A related debate is how to view ethical rules – as fundamental and universal, likethe laws of science or as rules that provide a framework for interacting with other people in aproductive way. Moreover, from a global perspective, ethical rules differ across different cultures. In somecountries it is considered a common business practice to offer bribes or kickbacks, whereas in theU.S. this practice is illegal and unethical. Is one culture’s “bribe” just another culture’s“lobbying”? The “bribe” is considered unlawful, whereas the lobbyist is working in a legallyrecognized manner as long as s/he does not transfer money to gain access to power. Note thatethics is not law, and the role of

Collectively, the UAS7 alliance members collaborate with more than1400 university partners worldwide. The UAS7 offers a wide variety of exchange opportunities for international students, includingsummer, semester, and year-long exchange opportunities. In addition, UAS7 offers graduateprograms in English for students who are seeking a degree beyond the Bachelor’s and Master’slevel. The universities of applied sciences (UAS) are relatively new. They were established in theearly 1970’s with the objective to help German industries maintain their internationalcompetitiveness. This new approach to higher education was intended to satisfy a
