then compare their findings to analyticalresults. The lab has a final project involving an experimental modal test and the creation of afinite element model of a structure of the students’ choosing. among structural engineeringsoftware and offers an opportunity for students to develop an appreciation for having a workingknowledge of a variety of software programs to use in the engineering design process.As part of a course culmination engineering design project (EDP), students were required todesign a floor truss, build it, and test it to failure. The students were limited to 8-ft long 2x4s,plywood, and common nails. Therefore, connections would require plywood gusset plates nailedto the 2x4 structural components. Even during seniordesign projects in their senior year, it was still found that some students had some difficulty indrawing the S/B diagrams. The method of sections [1,2] can be used to determine fully the shear force and bending momentat any cross-section of beams and to draw the S/B diagrams. When there are several externalforces on a beam, the beam must be divided into several segments. The method of sections willbe used repeatedly in each segment. Since it is tedious and time-consuming to use this method,the graphical approach for drawing S/B diagrams is introduced
