Similar to findings of others, this study found that students’ views of mathematics as amale domain decreases as grade level increases (Kloosterman, Tassell, Ponniah, & Essex, 20015;McGraw & Lubienski, 20076). As EOE Director, Andrea led Cockrell School of Engineering efforts to recruit and retain ethnically underrepresented students as well as students with backgrounds or experiences that contributed to the overall diversity of the School. During her term, Andrea raised more than $3.7 million in private and public grants to support the EOE program and its mission. Applications were distributedand students were required to submit a letter from their math or science instructor explainingtheir performance in math classes. The applications were reviewed and priority was given tothose students who struggled with math according to their grades and to the opinion of their highschool instructor or counselor. Ten participants were actively involved in AISES, four served or wereserving as officers at the time of their interview. Six students either had attended or wereplanning to attend the National Conference. Five students had been active previously, but wereforced to limit their involvement due to curricular and work constraints. For mixed-race students who are not culturally identified, AISES is a place to be involved andlearn about Native American cultural “stuff” but not in an over-bearing or threatening way.
