At BCU, a project of the typedescribed below are assigned in the microprocessor and embedded systems course.The project, assigned to a group of 2 to 3 students may be stated as follows: “design, developand implement a microcontroller-based system on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) to measure thetemperature of a specified location and transmit the measurement by wireless means to a givenserver”. In this assignment, the students will have to obtain on their own all the informationneeded to do the project. The instructor provides the

The participants also worked in small teams on a community based servicelearning project to build a project. The projects did not require any prior engineering knowledge.In comparison to our work, our workshops are intended for first year students that havecompleted the Foundations of Engineering I course and have some knowledge of engineering.Our workshops are only focused on motivating the students to remain in engineering. Connections Collaborative (CSC²) initiated andsupported a summer research opportunity for underrepresented minorities within the College ofEngineering at California State University Chico. The aim was to recruit and retain students inscience, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors and facilitate their academicsuccess through hands on learning. Through an application process which considered studentinterests and backgrounds, awardees were paired with a faculty mentor to work on a researchproject over the summer. Students received a stipend and nominal equipment budget to purchasesmall items to support their research projects. In the past four years, a longitudinal study has been conducted at NorthCarolina A & T State University to assess the effectiveness of the North Carolina Louis StokesAlliance for Minority Participation project. Key information such as demographic information(e.g., gender, ethnicity), and academic information (e.g., high school GPA, SAT score) about theparticipants in the project was recorded. Over the years, student performance was tracked duringtheir stay at the university and information about whether those participants went to graduateschool was recorded. Given the complex nature of the problem, a multivariate statisticalapproach - multiway frequency analysis was used to investigate the association among thevariables

Findings suggest that students often lack resources for effectively solving teamproblems, though “high achieving” students, defined as having a self-reported GPA of 3.5 orabove, are often more proactive when dealing with slacker teammates, using strategies such assetting early deadlines or selecting teammates known also to be high achievers. However, acrossthe board, students preferred to “do nothing” when dealing with domineering or exclusionaryteammates.These findings shed light on the disproportionate burden women and under-representedminorities face in team projects and the lack of resources
