Several of these presentations can be organizedas lunch seminars. In addition, it is very important to schedule presentations for the students tohighlight their accomplishments. students by combining laboratory experiencewith weekly instructional seminars in an attempt to foster future success in graduateschool. This approach was designed and implemented for a ten-week summer researchexperience program for undergraduate students. The weekly instructional seminar seriesaddressed research skills in three key areas: communication, investigation, anddocumentation. The seminar series began with the “Communications Seminars,” where studentparticipants learned how to concisely explain their research topics through an ‘elevatortalk’ activity, a common exercise utilized in business fields. ofparticular importance in the field of Engineering. The number of engineering degrees hasdeclined during the past decade [4]. This decline, coupled with the continuedglobalization of our economic markets, bears serious implications for the economicdevelopment and prosperity of the nation. The national decline in engineering degreeshas been greater for minorities. In a recent national study, only two of five minoritystudents who enroll in engineering programs graduate with a baccalaureate degree inengineering, as compared to two of three non-minority students [5]. Another nationalstudy found that 54 percent of students entering four-year colleges in 1997 had a degreesix years later, with an even lower percentage for Hispanics and Blacks [6]. To

subject.I was very apprehensive for a long time after becoming an engineer. I often felt inferior and questioned myabilities and professional decisions; most of the time my concerns were unfounded. It was then that I grewangry with myself that I had allowed one man to create so much grief in my life. I knew there had to be abetter way. I never wanted anyone else to experience the pain I had gone through. I began to seek outways to help other minority and women engineering students.
