FrameworksAbstractPreviously, researchers developed and applied a sustainable design rubric, based on the NinePrinciples of Sustainable Engineering, to civil engineering student design projects. Despite the completion of the hardware part of the robot, the softwaredevelopment required more rigorous programming skills, and therefore, involvement of aComputer Science student. Theinitiatives we are presenting here follow a similar focus on the visual arts, but in no way doesthis mean that we advocate for the visual arts to be the primary area of integration nor the onebetter suited for initial attempts in the curricula and campus life. and teaching in the freshman engineering program and the mechanical engineering program. She is also the Assistant Director of the NAE Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP) at ASU and works closely with the Director to ensure the success of the program. Dr. Zhu is also involved in the ASU ProMod project, the Engineering Projects in Community Service program, the Engineering Futures program, the Global Freshman Academy/Earned Admission Program, and the ASU Kern Project. She was a part of the team that designed a largely team and activity based online Introduction to Engineering course. She has also co-developed two unique MOOCs, Introduction to Engineering and Perspectives on Grand Challenges for Engineering

by students, and contrast it with that used bySTEM professionals.In [2] the authors showed that “professional” STEM writing is far from homogeneous anddemonstrated significant differences not only between engineering and natural science writing,but also between different disciplines within engineering: samples of physics, structural,electrical, and mechanical engineering writing were compared and found to have pronounceddifferences in voice, style, and diction. Institutional Innovation Staring from the Grassroots LevelAbstractIn this project, a town hall meeting was conducted with faculty and staff from all departments ina college of engineering. Teams of 10-12 people were asked to generate ideas for collaborativeexchange among faculty, staff, and students to better support student success, retention andprogression. The purpose of the town hall format was to intentionally initiate change within thecollege from the grass root levels instead of mandates coming top down. Dozens of ideas weregenerated, qualitatively sorted into common themes, and ordered by frequency. Each theme wasthen discussed in a meeting with administration to assign relative weights for anticipated costand perceived impact
