Carolina Commission onHigher Education defines service learning as follows: Service learning is college student learning at any level and in any situation that is linked in a direct, hands-on fashion to the resolution of a problem or concern in a target community outside the institution.During this trip, the students of the University of South Carolina fulfilled this definition throughthe use of their hands and their hearts to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coastregion. With the aid and logistical support of the Salvation Army, this project was a true servicelearning collaboration with a non-profit organization and a major research university. Workingwith Salvation Army volunteers, students provided on-the

approaches to a broader audience.Dr. Edwin van Hassel, University of Antwerp Edwin van Hassel is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Transport and Regional economics, Antwerp University where he is also teaching three courses. He has an engineering degree in naval architecture and he has a PhD in applied economics. His main research interest and expertise is in inland navigation, port hinterland transport, ship design and transport modelling. He holds a PhD with a topic in the field of inland waterway transport. More recently the scope of his work has been extended to maritime cost chain modelling. He also is involved in several research ranging from logistics projects to infrastructure cost benefit analysis and

the capabilities of thevehicle through the incorporation of new sensors and actuators. We present the design of theflight recorder and our first experience using it in an educational program. We also present thedesign of the onboard computer system.IntroductionEver since the publication of their little yellow book “Build Your Own Underwater Robot andOther Wet Projects” by Harry Bohm and Vicki Jensen [Westcoast Words, Vancouver, BC]thousands of students have built and flown Sea Perch remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)(www.seaperch.org). Made of PVC pipe, toy motors, switches, and other low-cost easilyobtained parts, the Sea Perch has provided students with hands-on experience in marine roboticsand introduced them to basic concepts in ocean

Course Textbook: Applied Naval Architecture by Robert B. Zubaly, 1996 [5]. Coursematerial supplemented with instructor material.Software (online) / Labs: GHS, Rhino, ORCA 3D, Ship Stability Simulator, Shipyard tour,Principles of Sailing lab, overview of CFD for marine applications.Students must conduct an independent research project on a topic pertaining to navalarchitecture. The instructor gives several suggested topics to show the breadth of topics thatcould be selected. All students are required to submit their proposed topic and abstract to theinstructor for approval. Students could also work in pairs, however the requirements (depth ofresearch and length of paper) are increased accordingly. Students submit a draft and theinstructor

recognizingpotential shortcomings the NEST engineers can encourage the team to take corrective action. Forexample, although it is quite possible for a team of entirely electrical engineering majors tosucceed, it would behoove them to seek out some more diverse members. The team could beimproved by recruiting mechanical engineers to design the hull, finance and business majors tospearhead the fundraising, English majors to polish the technical documents and computerscience majors to assist in the software programming and website development. Some tips forachieving this are also relayed, such as talking to the school to make the AUV competition countfor class credit. This encourages more students to join, and allows them to devote more time tothe project. At

transports most of the world traded oil. Understandingits water dynamics is therefore a necessary component for any environmentalstudies, coastal development projects, and oil pollution prediction models to beundertaken in the region. The current paper reports major findings of recent fieldobservations and hydrodynamic modeling effort conducted in the Arabian Gulf. The field observations were obtained during a hydrographic survey conducted tomeasure the salinity and temperature in the southern shelf of the Gulf in summerand winter seasons. Salinity and temperature fields were developed tocomplement the physical data established from earlier studies. Hydrodynamicsimulation of the Arabian Gulf was made using a three dimension rectilinear gridsystem

the sea surface every 200 km,30000 in total.4 The ESA takes these and mathematically analyzes them to find wave energy anddirection. Within three weeks worth of images, 10 rogue waves measuring 25 meters or higherwere found, a much higher number than was expected. Heller points out that one estimate fromthis data suggest that “50 or more freak waves are stalking the seas right now.”18 Once theexistence of rogue waves was established, the major focus of the research has been ondetermination of how they form and where they occur most often. The European Space Agencycreated a new research project called WaveAtlas to create an atlas of rogue waves as well ascarry out statistical analysis on them.4There is still a significant amount of debate on

World ocean weather forecasts, wave forecasts, ocean circulation, oil spill forecasts and forecasts of fish and shellfish resources have an insatiable appetite formore and faster computational capability. In my short lifetime, computational assets have grownfrom flops to kiloflops, to megaflops, to gigaflops, to terraflops to petaflops with no end in sight. Our National Science Foundation, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Departmentof Energy have been instrumental in keeping overall U.S. computational science and engineeringassets at the cutting edge.
