this simple modeling of car motion, and where x(t) is theinput (force excitation resulting from pressing the gas pedal) and y(t) is the output (displacementresponse of a car). The Laplace transform of this differential equation is: Ms2Y(s) + BsY(s) + KY(s) = X(s) (2)where X(s) and Y(s) are the Laplace Transforms of x(t) and y(t), respectively.3 The displacement, velocity, and acceleration responses of the two cars for various car andinput parameters are illustrated in the following sections. For simplicity, units for the parametersand variables are not included in the equations of motion of the two cars.A. Displacement, Velocity, and Acceleration Responses of Each Car to a Step Input

that prepare graduates to attain theprogram educational objectives.” The criteria are typically met across a number of junior andsenior level courses. We use S/U/- (satisfactory/unsatisfactory/Not Available) notation toidentify whether a student met one or more of these criteria in a given course. An S roughlymaps to grades of C or better, but is not always a given. Thus, each faculty member shouldmanually record these letter grades for each of his/her course students in a given semester. Ourengineering curriculum typically offers 12 courses at junior and senior levels every semester, andhas typical enrollments of 18 per course. A typical student spends 6 or more semesters in ourprogram to satisfy the graduation requirements. We graduate 20 to

We describe how the model is implemented with respect

DAN.4-2 DAN.4-3 Figure 1 – The Synthesis Step for Systems and Software Architecting: DA = DesignApproach; DAx.y-z = Design Approach for sub-function x.y for architecture zAfter the synthesis matrix has been developed, the (three) alternative architectures are evaluatedusing a ”standard” weighting and rating scheme6. This is the “analysis” step which producesmeasures of the cost and the effectiveness of each of the alternatives. We note that in the CE-AM approach we are explicitly defining and evaluating alternativearchitectures, with the ultimate goal of finding a cost-effective architecture (solution) for thecustomer(s) (stakeholders). The steps of the procedure are the same as the critical “views” in thateach step is defined by
