Education, 2019 Exploiting Digital Twin Technology to Teach Engineering Fundamentals and Afford Real-World Learning Opportunities University of Southern CaliforniaAbstractThis paper presents an innovative instructional approach that capitalizes on digitaltwin technology to transform traditional lectures into “learning-by doing”experiences in the course laboratory. In this paper, we address how the use ofdigital twin technology in laboratory simulation environments affords studentsauthentic learning experiences, i.e., experiences that reflect what a learner isexpected to encounter in the real-world. The immediate feedback feature, enabledby the connection of the digital twin to the physical twin, provides

, I worked for NASA at a Satellite Tracking Station in Ecuador Subsequently I obtained my M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. My Ph.D. dissertation work (on Neural Networks applied to control systems and automation) went to the DOD in Virginia. My formal grad- uate academic training was in Control Systems, Telecommunications and Applied Mathematics. After receiving my Masters and Ph.D. degrees in EE, I joined AT&T Bell Laboratories. During my tenure at Bell Labs, I became skilled in the formal methodology and processes of Systems Engineering and Sys- tems Architecture applied to large systems. Throughout my career, in the high-tech

in the VR gaming scenario were designed based on the six questions that measure the Levelof Complexity in the ST skills instrument. Both dependent variables indicated the more systematicscores and the total for each student ranged from 0 to 6.Method of Analysis and Scoring SystemR (version 3.3.1) was used along with RStudios for generating graphs and Statistical Package forthe Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the study results. R is a programming languageand environment for various data analysis and graphics developed by Bell Laboratories. SPSS isowned by IBM and it has an interactive and user-friendly interface to ease up the data analysiswork. Two separate scoring sheets were prepared to record students’ preferences for the ST

build upentrepreneurial skills within one course or a couple of courses in an already crowded engineeringprogram. The College of Engineering (CoE) decided to embed entrepreneurial skills inengineering learning activities for a number of courses throughout the program curriculum, requiring an efficient and integrated process. By incorporating EML in different coursesequences and capstone courses such as circuits, electronic design, and communicationsequences, students will have the opportunity to develop and build up their entrepreneurialmindset. The three Cs: Curiosity, Connections, and Creating Value [26]” found in the KEEN frameworkare added as course outcomes. CoE included EML activities into the existing problem-basedlearning (PBL) laboratory
