Gupta is Assistant Research Professor in Physics and Keystone Instructor in the A. J. Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland. Broadly speaking he is interested in modeling learning and reasoning processes. In particular, he is attracted to micro-genetic and socio-cultural models of learning. He has been working on how learners’ emotions are coupled with their conceptual and epistemological reasoning. Lately, he has been interested in engineering design thinking, how engineering students come to understand and practice design, and how engineering students think about ethics and social responsi- bility.Dr. Chandra Anne Turpen, University of Maryland, College Park Chandra Turpen is a research

alterations?(3) Was the role of fire safety engineering recognised in the 2016 alterations package?(4) Are the public or even the public representatives literate enough in engineering terms to ask the critical leading questions, to separate the chaff from the wheat?(5) If a professional engineer with fire safety expertise was party to the design and construction team would their responsibilities to keeping to a Code of Ethics for Engineers {e.g. the Institution of Civil Engineers [3], or the Institution of Fire Engineers [4]) have made a difference to the nature of the specification of the materials used? Both codes would have required their member to show due regard for the safety of life and health of the public, and for any

. We viewed this as a way to focusstudents on their teammates’ strengths, rather than focusing on deficits. We additionally askedthem to explain what interests and experiences drove them to become an engineer. In the following class session, they conducted a team gap analysis, placing a tick mark for eachperson who had each specific professional skill (additional areas focused on lifelong learning, ethics, problem solving, and technical competence). Students self-assessed whether theypossessed each skill, making this a binary choice (present/absent) for each member. For ourpurposes in this paper, we narrow our scope to the areas below, which were well covered by sub-topics:Professional Communications Skills Technical writing (technical
