at NAU and CQUPT.NAU faculty use the shortened semester duration to have additional time to arrange livingabroad, travel preparation, and organize courses for work in China within the 16-week NAUsemester timeframe.Within the twelve weeks, all course content is carried out while at CQUPT with the exception ofthe final exam. NAU faculty prepare the final exams and CQUPT co-faculty along with theuniversity administrative office distributes and grade them. This usually occurs between week 17and 19. Overall, the percent of engineering students graduating in fouryears has increased from 7.3% for Fall 2013 freshmen to 17.4% for Fall 2015 freshmen, our firstcohort in this project. experience is limitedto a single capstone project undertaken in their final year [13-15]. Despite the fact that engineering and scientific knowledge has grown at an astonishing rate overthe past century, engineering still only nominally requires 4 years of training (i.e., a bachelor’s degree) tobe able to enter and operate in the engineering workforce. For comparison, the number of years oftraining needed to practice law has increased from 4 to 7 and to practice medicine has increased from 3 to10 over the same time period. Given the breadth and depth of the technical knowledge students need tomaster, there are very few opportunities to incorporate additional non-technical material into mosttechnical courses, especially the engineering

Studies have demonstrated that STEM students find it challenging to work with adiverse population. This is juxtaposed with the reality that over 50% of STEM employers preferto hire interculturally competent graduates. As such, national agencies and higher educationinstitutions have been urging STEM faculty to integrate intercultural competence into thecurriculum. Through this study, we intend to showcase the integration of interculturalcompetence concepts in a first-year cybersecurity classroom.
