contextualizationThe four courses were contextualized in a hypothetical remodeling project of a small, singlefamily residence. This scenario was chosen because it is familiar to students, it is a realisticapplication of class principles, and it lends itself well to integrating material from differentcourses. An overview of the house is shown in Figure 1. Students analyzed two houseremodeling improvements in this project: installation of an air conditioning (AC) unit on theroof, and removal of an exterior wall to open up access to the yard. It is guided by the theory of liminality. Forty-two postdocsemployed at a Mid-Atlantic, research-intensive University, participated in individual interviewsto describe their experiences as postdocs at the University.
