, lecture-based model. Most class periods werespent introducing new material to the students. After the first exam was given and graded, it wasdetermined that student performance was not satisfactory, and changes needed to be made to thecourse. The lecture-based model was abandoned in favor of a flipped classroom. The flipped classroom involves directing students to engage in independent learning activities beforeclass, facilitated by instructional videos or reading assignments. Class time then features studentssolving problems or holding discussions in groups. Research has shown that a flipped coursegenerally increases student achievement2,3 and student perception of the course4. Proceedings of the 2021 ASEE Gulf-Southwest

decades ago, however italone no longer closes the gap in knowledge that civil engineers must attain and maintain, through education, mentored experience, and self-development for responsible charge – asdocumented in the current edition of the CEBOK.In 2019, ASCE completed work on the third edition of the CEBOK [1]. This CEBOKdemonstrates that the gap continues to expand at the pace of change – and civil engineers need topursue post-graduate education along with structured mentorship, self-development, and life-long learning to first attain and then maintain the competencies required for responsible charge.Hence the need for a certification program and credential to attest to a civil engineer’s fulfillmentof the CEBOK. Finally, judging people prefer orderly, structured, task-oriented lives, while perceiving people prefer flexibility and openness.A 1980 study by the ASEE-MBTI Engineering Consortium of eight universities showed that GenX engineering students are dominated by thinking and judging personality types and are moreoften introverted; there was little difference between sensing and intuitive types [1]. Our purpose in sharing our current situation is to gain feedback fromcolleagues experienced with projects of this size and type on how to effectively make midstreamcorrections to design-based methods in ways that maintain research and project fidelity. Duringthe 2019-20 academic year, the first year of the project, we created tools and procedures for datacollection and analysis that we piloted in Spring 2020 with the first cohort of students toparticipate in the S-STEM program. With regard to supporting undergraduate students, the planfor this multi-year, grant-funded project is to scale each year, along with increasing the size ofparticipant cohorts, through the fifth and final year of the project.
