is vital to developing engineering diversity. In the United States, the enrollment ofdomestic Black or African American and Hispanic students in doctoral programs is low (4.3%and 8.4%, respectively) compared to other races [1]. These percentages are even far less thantheir representation within the US population, 13.6%, and 18.6%, respectively [2]. Further, it hasbeen shown that mentoring programs focused on URM undergraduate students positively impacttheir academic performance and retention [3]. As a result of these findings,we increased our outreach opportunities to allow students to discuss and explore the benefitsof graduate school to build the interest and self-efficacy of our target population. Further, weasked faculty members that work with the students to reach out to students individually andencourage them to apply. -STEM Program for First-Year Students: 3rd-Year Results1 IntroductionIn 2012, over four million freshmen were enrolled in U.S. four-year institutions of highereducation, and of those almost two million received Pell grants in their first year. Six years lateronly 43% of those students had obtained a bachelor’s degree, 10 percentage points behind non-Pell recipients [1]. student well-being and retentionIntroductionDoctoral students are experiencing a “mental health crisis” [1], including high rates of mentalhealth concerns and mental health service utilization ([1], [2], [3]) and high rates of attrition.Estimates suggest that the national attrition rate for doctoral students is near 50% (e.g., in [4],[5], [6]). Ethics Reasoning Instrument (EERI), and concept map assessment to characterizewhere students “are at” when they come to college, the results of which can be found in past ASEEpublications. Historically, only half of declared engineering undergraduates will graduate with abachelor’s degree in engineering [1], [2]. Furthermore, underrepresented minority (URM)students and women enroll in engineering programs at much lower rates than their white malecounterparts and suffer disproportionate attrition rates [1]-[3]. This lack of participation andpersistence in engineering programs leads to an inequitable and unrepresentative engineeringworkforce [1]. Support for Undergraduate EngineeringStudents[1], East Carolina University (ECU) in collaboration with three partnering communitycolleges was awarded a Multi-Institutional Track 3 S-STEM Grant (Grant number: 1930497) inJanuary 2020. The intention of the project was to recruit 2 cohorts of scholars with 40 studentseach. One cohort was to start their pursuit of a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering degreein Fall 2020 and the other in Fall 2021.
