Studentswere able to overcome these challenges and found both the process of constructing the portfolioand having the portfolio to be valuable. The studio setting provided a number of opportunitiesand benefits that other reporting requirements do not, including: 1) meeting other participants inthe program and sharing reflections with their peers; 2) addressing how the experience preparedthem for future practice with employers as the intended audience; and 3) articulating theirunderstanding of what engineers do, and what contributes to effective practice.Our pilot Co-op project suggested that writing the final experience report involves an unknownaudience. . The 2010 test results show that nine of the students scored PartiallyProficient on the language arts/literacy test and one student scored Proficient. There are five testsubsets and those scores are reported in percents. It is the expository writing sample score that isof interest in this study because that is the writing genre that the students will use to explain anddescribe their engineering experiences. and reliable evaluation of student performance on open-ended problems is a challenge given that numerous reasonable responses are likely to exist for agiven problem and multiple instructors and peers may be evaluating student work. In previouswork, evaluation tools for open-ended problems, specifically Model-Eliciting Activities (MEAs),were rigorously developed to ensure that the evaluation tools evolved with fidelity tocharacteristics of high performance and with increased reliability. S-STEM funding has influenced educational practices in the ERE department.The lessons learned from SLS program have informed the ERE department Diversity andRetention Plan required by the new university accreditation process, whose purpose is to increaseretention of diverse students in all majors. One part of the plan that was informed by the SLSproject is the implementation of a peer mentoring program for first year engineering (ERE)students. The peer mentoring program was started due to the SLS project outcomes thatindicated the importance of peer mentoring. Assessment of the new peer mentoring program isnot yet complete. In addition, based on outcomes from the SLS project, the ERE department isencouraging the university to implement
