Though many considerations were involved in theproposal submission stage, the real-world integration of this work was still a novel concept.Our intention was to create content that could be easily adapted by teachers after they were introduced tothe curriculum for their use. With ethics only visible in selectengineering courses, the importance of ethics to engineering education and practice might not becommunicated to students. ABET’s current leadership-related student outcome 3.5 requiresengineering program students to demonstrate, “an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provideleadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives,” [7]. In the workshop, the facilitators will share their experiences and the modifications that have beenmade to scale each activity for these diverse groups of students. At the conclusion of the workshop, eachparticipant will receive a kit containing all materials necessary to complete these two activities with agroup of students.The EDP is an integral part of the curriculum of first-year engineering design courses, as well as K-12STEM and engineering classes. However, it is important to note the preliminarynature of this work, and the need for further course build-up and analysis. Overall, empatheticdispositions in engineering students can be cultivated by asking them to empathize in theirproblem-solving endeavors. Further, the humanities with integrated STEM problem-solving canprovide optimal gains in empathic dispositions for engineering students.Implications from this preliminary work do show promise. The simple implementation of askingstudents to empathize before or during the problem-solving process could be a simple addition tocurrent engineering curriculum and design.
