question: How do the curricular, advising, and cohort-building elements of the RedShirt program impact the students’ experiences in the sophomore orjunior year at their university and in engineering? RedShirt students in the sophomore and junioryears responded to a semi-structured list of questions through focus group participation, withsome individual follow-up interviews.The thematic findings from sophomores and juniors include: academic strategies for respondingto more challenging classes; adjusting to new peer groups; developing identity as a minoritizedstudent; effects of advising interactions; and, dealing with living arrangements and other externalfactors. We can theninfer whether the intern program is contributing toward the two DoE goals and the Justice40objective. The survey results will also provide an indirect ABET assessment of our engineeringprograms.Over the coming years, our team will establish a cadence of candidate recruitment, programoperation, survey administration, and analysis of survey results. Survey results will be used toimprove program operations, improve data collection, and inform our evaluation of the DoE andJustice40 goals. Our team will follow up on this WIP with subsequent ASEE publications thatreport on the assessment

The Case of Marquette University (MU)Marquette University (MU) was awarded an Adaptation ADVANCE grant in 2019. As part of itsprogramming, we decided to adapt and implement A&A activities. The Advocates group atMarquette was thus formed in Fall 2019 [11]. While the specific focus of the ADVANCEProgram at MU is on (i) equitable and inclusive faculty recruiting and (ii) improving departmentclimate, the Advocates’ primary goal is to develop best-practices that involve men faculty foraddressing gender equity

Victor’s doctoral dissertation focuses on investigating the development of performance-engineered mix designs to produce balanced mix designs. and BackgroundDespite decades of targeted effort and resources, women remain dramatically underrepresentedin engineering fields (Yoder, 2012) and this underrepresentation can lead to a number ormarginalizing experiences. Researchers have demonstrated the ways in which masculine normsand values are reflected in engineering practice and therefore code the discipline as male(Dryburgh, 1999; Secules, 2019). At the same time, technical/social dualisms map intomale/female binaries in ways that inform and support beliefs about what counts as engineeringwork and what is peripheral to the practice (Faulkner, 2000, 2007). , and all course instruction takes place in English.Although the English-language skills of participants in this study were not assessed, in 2017, theUM-SJTU JI conducted a survey of undergraduate students who took the TOEFL, finding themean score was 102.45 (N = 186; SD = 6.19). Of undergraduate students who take the TOEFL,this score falls in approximately the 85th percentile.[61] As a result, all participants in this samplehave high-level English-language proficiency. The average TOEFL score of test takers fromChina is 79.[61]The inclusion of responses in this study was voluntary and non-incentivized.
