Such innovation is necessary for addressing increasingly complexissues such as global warming and cybersecurity and requires a national workforce that consistsof diverse perspectives. Yet, extant cultures within the institutions that educate and train the nextgenerations of STEM professionals tend to privilege long-held majority perspectives of knowing,thinking, and doing in science and engineering. Such cultures are perpetuated through courseassessments, which students use to define and make meaning of their major (Stevens et al., 2014;Yoon et al., 2019

Yates began her teaching career at Pittsburg State University in 2002, and has taught numerous construction courses throughout her academic career including: Construction Drawings, Concrete Tech- nology, Estimating I, Strength of Materials in Construction, Structures I, Construction Contracts, and Capstone courses. She received the Halliburton Excellent Young Teacher Award in 2008, and the CEAT Advisor of the Year in 2010. Dr. Yates served as the Associated Schools of Construction Region 5 Di- rector from 2014-17, ASC International Secretary from 2018-20, and was named CMAA Educator of the Year in 2019. Foundation, and a prior paper by the P4E research team was awarded Best Diversity Paper at the ASEE Annual Conference in 2015. She also conducts technical research with civil engineering and construction management graduate students. She and her students study ways to extend the safe and useful life of existing structures, particularly concrete bridges, through enhanced inspection, management and repair techniques. This research has been funded by the Mountain Plains Consortium, a USDOT University Transportation Center, and the Colorado Department of Transportation. She teaches courses in structural engineering such as reinforced and prestressed concrete design and civil engineering materials to upper division undergraduates
