The schoolhas female dominant gender distribution and around 40 percent of the students participate in theNational School Lunch Program (NSLP) 7.Together the team introduced approximately sixty ninth-grade biology students to thefundamentals of optics and how these basics play a significant role in their daily-lives throughmodules comprised of an activity, lecture and discussion. The goals of this program structure andcontent are to: 1) improve the students’ perception about concepts in STEM; 2) frame theimportance and influence of STEM on human life; and 3) motivate secondary students to pursuehigher education in STEM fields.2. plunged exponentially, primarily due tothe development of new sequencing technologies. The first next-generation sequencingtechnology, the 454, began the race to $1000 genome in 2006 [1],[2]. This change has impactedbiomedical research, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical development, and is also beginning tochange clinical practice [3]–[6]. The development of personalized medicine, genetic biomarkersof cancer, and direct-to-consumer genetic testing are all the result of advances in DNAsequencing technologies.Biomedical and bioengineering students often enter these fields. They will need to have a basicunderstanding of the technologies that are used to explore the field of genomics, and an ability touse the data they encounter. Bioengineers are

IntroductionIn the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Dallas, students areexposed to 3D CAD modeling during their freshman year [1-3] but are required to take a moreintensive CAD course typically taken during the second semester of sophomore year or firstsemester of their junior year. This CAD course covers 3D part and assembly modeling, parametric curve and surface modeling, fabrication packages for traditional and additivemanufacturing, and conventional and geometric tolerancing.GD&T provides an effective means of specifying nominal part geometry and the allowablevariation. The importance of GD&T includes: producing components that

Moreover, thenumber of international students, both at graduate and undergraduate levels, has been increasingannually since 1950 with few exceptions [2]. Besides contributing to the ongoing research and development work at the universities, adding to the cultural diversity on campuses, and contributing to university’s finances throughtuition and other fees, international graduate students play an important role in the undergraduateeducation at US universities by serving as teaching assistants (TAs), especially in STEMdisciplines [3]. These international teaching assistants (ITAs) serve as laboratory assistants, graders for assignments, and

Philosophy and structure of a mechatronics engineering program “divert from theclassical single-discipline engineering programs and induce a challenge for the higher educationinstitutions. Different institutions in various countries are reacting differently to this challengebut, all aiming at educating mechatronics engineers [1].” Constructing a high level undergraduatemechatronics course, therefore, poses a clear challenge in selecting the appropriate content, methodology, and course structure. Moreover, specific curricula vary among institutions

multiple ways to get admitted to a University ofApplied Sciences; this makes the students as a group more inhomogeneous. The most commonway to enter the HSKA is by earning the so-called “Abitur”, which denotes graduation foruniversity-preparatory high schools (this is the highest level of secondary education in Germanyand typically takes 12 years of school). The percentage of students graduating with an Abitur hasbeen growing over the past decade, as shown in Figure 1. Other school students may decide toleave school after finishing 10th grade of secondary school and do a professional apprenticeshipin industry, which usually lasts 3 years. After successfully completing an apprentice program, these students can go another year to a secondary

Experimental modal analysis has beenconducted on bridges traditionally using single-input multiple-output (SIMO), multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO), or output-only methods, where inputs refer to dynamic excitation byimpact or harmonic forcing and outputs are displacements or accelerations generally measured ata resolution necessary to accurately describe a mode shape. The most popular methods use aninstrumented hammer, impactor, or harmonic exciter and an array of wired or wirelessaccelerometers [1].Cole McDaniel and others at Cal Poly [2,3] have long used electromechanical shakers todemonstrate principles of dynamic structural response in the classroom and in full-scalebuildings. The travel time test requires that both 120 V ac (for thecompressor) and 125 V dc (for the controls) be provided to the breaker. On the breaker tested, alarge spring is used to open the interrupters, while a pneumatic system is used to close thebreaker. A Doble TDR900 is used to perform the test. Librarians have a culture of seminars andworkshops to teach information literacy skills and often take this approach to RDM instruction.Research faculty, on the other hand, teach credit classes as a part of their teaching load. Dataliteracy is a topic that can be approached two ways: workshops for focused content, and coursesto cover a subject in both breadth and depth. The authors chose to teach a credit course toprovide in-depth coverage of RDM topics. In developing a graduate course to teach engineeringstudents RDM skills, the authors utilized material developed by Whitmire, a librarian, from her2-credit course taught during 2014 [13]. Briney’s

Yet, most research universities, as well as quite a few non-research colleges, require at least 1-2 semestersof core undergraduate coursework in theoretical or foundational CS.We summarize some interesting lessons learned from teaching theoretical CS to mostly undergraduate upperclassmen(as well as a few non-traditional students) at two prominent public research universities in the US Pacific Northwest

strategically on students’ experiences and knowledge from pastcourses. The goal of this committee is to improve the quality of student learning by consideringnot only course content, but also by considering the quantity and timing of various types of skillbuilding. Technical communication (TC) is one of these common threads. We believe thesequence of instruction related to various forms of technical communication (written, oral, anddrawing skills) should intentionally develop students’ abilities so that by graduation they areprepared for a professional engineering environment.Several research studies have identified the gap between engineering students’ writingexperiences and the expectations of professional writing in the engineering workplace [1], [2

writing-intensive courses typically are taken in the first or second year, leaving engineering students without critical writing and communicative course supports as theymove beyond their sophomore year.In today’s changing engineering curriculum, there is an opportunity to use writing to supportengineering instructional goals and expected student learning outcomes. Evidence from aCanadian national survey of engineering graduates indicates that the need for technical writing iswell-understood—most recent engineering graduates who participated in surveys and focusgroups requested that more opportunities for engineering-based writing and presenting, coupledwith in-depth feedback, be provided to future engineering students [1].The implementation of

From the perspectivesof technological literacy two issues are considered, namely fake news, and the role ofprejudice in public perceptions of what happened. It is concluded that a radically different approach to the design of the curriculum will berequired if the public are to become engaged in engineering and technological literacy.IntroductionIn 2017 the TELPHE division of ASEE published the fourth edition in its series of handbooksin which the authors responded to a paper by Heywood in which he discussed the problemsfacing those who would establish a community of scholarship in technological andengineering literacy [1]. Established in 2011 with the goal to increase diversity andinclusiveness in the engineering profession, in 2017 it is comprised of 15 members acrossvarious divisions. An excerpt from the ADC's broad Statement on Diversity [1] expresses that“ASEE believes that diversity and inclusiveness enriches and is essential to educationalexperiences and innovations that drive the development of creative solutions in addressing theworld’s challenges.” With the goal of increasing diversity and inclusiveness in the engineeringprofession, the committee organizes several types of diversity-related conference

Accounting Office (GAO) estimates that in 2015 the percentage of all faculty membersteaching at four-year institutions in the U.S., including part-time, in non-tenure-track appointments was61% [1]. Considering only full-time positions at four-year universities, the percentage of non-tenure-trackappointments was 34%. Data from the 2014 ASEE survey of engineering programs in the United Statesshows that the percentage of non-tenure-track appointments in engineering departments is 8.9%.Non-tenure-track appointments are growing much faster than tenure-track appointments. From 1995 to2011, the number of tenure-track positions increased by 9.6% while the number of non-tenure-track full-time positions increased by 109.2% [1]. The reasons for this increase
