Hemoglobin absorbs more light than water and othertissue in the brain. Increase in hemoglobin in the brain is associated with an increase in cognitiveactivity [24]. The light which is not absorbed is reflected back to the detectors on the cap. Thedifferent absorption spectra of oxy-hemoglobin and deoxy-hemoglobin make it possible todescribe activated brain regions and cognitive activities through the change in hemoglobinconcentration, or Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) response.fMRI similarly measures activity indirectly through changes in hemoglobin in
