. Background on VAWTsAccording to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, “wind is an increasingly significantsource of energy in Minnesota” [1]. The majority of growth in wind energy has beenaccomplished with horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs), typically in large arrays or “windfarms” that produce utility scale amounts of power. However, small-scale systems have also seenlarge growth, 35% in 2012, with particular attractiveness for rural and agricultural areas [2]. TheNational Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) suggests that greater use of small wind turbinesin the built environment can positively affect the public perception of wind energy [3].An alternative to the HAWT design is the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). A VAWT spinsaround a vertical

engineering. Of the nearly 2200 students enrolled at Mount Union, approximately 130are majoring in one of the engineering disciplines.A manufacturing science course is required for mechanical engineering students during thespring semester of their final year. The course is comprised of a 2-credit-hour course lecture anda 1-credit laboratory. Before spring semester of 2017, the course followed a more traditionalstructure. Readings were assigned out of a manufacturing textbook, the manufacturing processeswere described during traditional academic lectures, and tests were proctored to assess studentlearning. The 1-credit-hour lab was used to tour five local manufacturing facilities throughoutthe semester. A comparison between the 2016 and 2017 course

service learning, in terms of an increased positive attitude toward service, through building client-based relationships with members of various educational learning communities.Participants and Course Context:The first set of participants are the students enrolled in the Programming 2 course, which is thesecond course in the introductory programming sequence at Ohio Northern University. Bothintroductory courses have three 50-minute lectures and one 175-minute laboratory sessionweekly during the semester, with the laboratory being used to reinforce just-covered lecturematerial. The first course uses C++ to provide experience in breaking problems down intofunctional units involving sequence, selection, and iteration; whereas the

. He obtained his Diploma and Ph.D. at Friedrich- Schiller-University in Jena, Germany for his theoretical work on transparent conducting oxides. Before he started at UIUC he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on a project that aimed at a description of non-adiabatic electron ion dynamics. His research revolves around excited electronic states and their dynamics in various materials using accurate computational methods and making use of modern super computers in order to understand, for instance, how light is absorbed in photo-voltaic materials. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2018 Measuring Student Learning of
