This time frame includes the early phase of theCOVID-19 pandemic lockdown that began in spring 2020. Thus, many students’ reflections werenot yet impacted by that event. We particularly focused on students’ reports in either technicalactivities or research activities and their career goals for analysis, which helped us answer theresearch questions. For technical work experience, we chose four open-ended questions from thesurvey to analyze in this study (see Appendix A). This is especially true in mathematics courses; those who perform well (i.e.,receive an A or B) are likely to persist, whereas students who perform poorly (i.e., receiving a D,F, or W) are likely to leave (e.g., [7]).Understanding the factors that lead to persistence should help stakeholders (e.g., instructors and ad-visors) develop interventions to counteract these problems. In our institution, the final student course performance is assessedby the letter grades ranging from not passing (D+ or below), C-, C, C+, B-, B, B+, and A. Table4 shows the percentage improvement of the letter grade for these three courses as the result ofpartial credit. Throughout this range of motion, the students needed to find the forcesat the connecting points B and C along with the torque that would be needed to drive the maindisk. study is being performed on two groups (A and B) of sophomore students inthe Joint Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hilland North Carolina State University. Student participants were grouped based on the sequence inwhich they took two required second-year courses (Biomechanics and Biomaterials). Group Aare students who enrolled in Biomechanics in the Fall 2022 (FA22) semester and Biomaterials inSpring 2023 (SP23).
