Paper ID #40566Pedagogical aspects of teaching nuclear fusion engineering basicsProf. Martin Nieto-Perez, Pennsylvania State University Martin Nieto-Perez got his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Aut´onoma Metropolitana in 1997. He obtained a Fulbright Scholarship for postgraduate studies for the 1998-2000 period, which enabled him to get his Master’s (2001) and Docotral (2004) degrees in Nuclear Engineer- ing, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He was a postdoctoral associate at the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory from 2004 to 2006. From 2008 to 2021

instructors carrying out the hands-on laboratory asstudents observed them along with the equipment. Students also often interacted with each otherand the lab instructor via chat and orally through a virtual conference communication systemsuch as WebEx or Zoom. Some scholars have highlighted the perceptions of students (during theCOVID era) as they engaged in virtual labs highlighting the robustness of the laboratory designand instructor preparation (as evidenced by student course evaluations), along with severalshortcomings of the virtual learning environment [9]. Some shortcomings noted by theseresearchers included: the lack of interaction between the teaching assistant and students andstudent-to-student interactions and teamwork, intense

aspecialization in optics and photonics. This was attempted through hands-on experimentsdemonstrating basic concepts in optics, and tours of laboratories on campus that demonstrate thewide range of applications of electrical and optical engineering. Experiments included aligningfiber optics, building telescopes, building pinhole cameras, experiments with fluorescencespectroscopy, transmission spectroscopy, and demonstrations of polarization. In addition to thefirst year seminar, the following semester a senior level experiment-based course on appliedspectroscopy was offered as well. In addition to experiments, the senior level course includes peerinstruction. While the audience for the two courses differ, the goals are much the same to recruitand retain

Circuits CourseAbstract As engineering instructors, we continue to review and test novel pedagogical ideas thatcan better engage engineers in learning the challenging fundamentals of our very often rigorousengineering curricula. This paper explores one significant change to the laboratories of ourfundamental circuits course (ECEG 210) at Bucknell University. After students completed manycore laboratories during the first half of the semester, we challenged student teams to considernew applications of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology to provide reliable electricity to variouselectrical end-uses at the residential level (off-grid). The students derived with many creativeapplications and developed and tested minimum viable product (MVP

Learning Styles of Construction Management StudentsAbstractStudents take in and process information in different ways. College faculty members‘teaching methods are not all the same. However, rarely there are any efforts by facultymembers to harmonize their teaching styles with their students’ learning styles. Whenthere is a major mismatch between the learning styles of majority students and teachingstyles of the instructors both get frustrated. Although it is not possible for the instructorsto match individual learning styles of every student in the class, as long as there is abalance in teaching method in relation to the teaching styles of the majority of thestudents overall effectiveness of the teaching in the class will rise. It is theorized

science students an opportunity to participate in authentic research experiences with faculty and graduatestudents. It has two components as lecture and research activities. Students spend two to four hours per week workingon research projects as a team. Introduction to Scientific Research is cross-listed among Computer, Electrical,Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science programs. The course objectives are (1) To identify real-worldproblems and survey their broader impacts, (2) To brainstorm possible solutions to real-world research problems, (3)To apply the scientific method while solving a real-world research problem, (4) To develop basic laboratory skills andsafety procedures relevant to the project, (5) To communicate scientific

virtual learning in 2020. After returning to on-campusactivities, these kits continued to be used to enable open-ended group projects, hands-onhomework assignments, and pre-laboratory exercises. We developed an affordable multi-courseelectronics kit by condensing three current hardware kits in the Circuit Analysis, Mechatronics, and Design Methodology courses. By removing redundant components and replacing expensiveparts with cheaper alternatives, we reduced the cost of the condensed kit by approximately 30%compared to purchasing the three course-specific kits. To support the kit usage, we created anonline repository with electronic safety, microcontroller tutorials, basic hardware and softwareinstruction, and coding examples. We developed a pre
