engineering graduates who enter themanufacturing workforce each year [1-3].1.2 Current Approaches to the Problem and Associated Gaps There are agencies and programs designed to address these needs. First, the NSF I-Corpsprogram [4] applies customer discovery to assist with the translation of lab-developedtechnology into commercializable products and services. Such programs offer entrepreneurialtraining, yet these programs external to the university that focus on impactful communication areoften difficult to obtain. Furthermore, their intended participant is generally someone with thetime allotted by their position to produce academically competitive applications, such asgraduate researchers and research-oriented professors. These programs have

these alternate spaces can increasestudent involvement and interest in the instructional content. It was demonstrated that pedagogies of self-generated stories and informal peer assessmentsprovide a unique opportunity for students to creatively make connections to academic content[1]. When aligned with instructional goals, student-created stories capture their attention andemotional interests while providing instructors a concrete and memorable insight into theirstudents’ learning [2, 3]. Stories also facilitate student learning through engagement, higher orderthinking, and elaboration [4, 5]. Besides using the stories to promote technological literacy [6],stories help students make meaning of their own experiences, building self-awareness

Technical Education (CTE) programs. However, mere availability of 3DP is not enough for teachers to fully utilize its potential in theirclassrooms. While basic 3DP skills can be obtained through a few hours of training, the basictraining is insufficient to ensure effective teaching Engineering Design Process (EDP) at the highschool level. To address this problem, this project develops an EDP course tightly integrated with3DP for preservice teachers (PST) who are going to enter the workforce in high schools.Engineering design process (EDP) has become an essential part for preservice teachers (PST),especially for high school STEM. 3DP brought transformative change to EDP which is an iterativeprocess that needs virtual/physical prototyping. Figure 1: Timeline of the four stages of industrial revolutionAccording to Pew research [13], the new generations, Millennials and Generation Z are raciallyand ethnically more diverse than the preceding generations. The rapid globalization alsodemanded the need for diversity and inclusion. Besides these factors, the new generations areexpected to be more educated than their predecessors. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and a diversified workforce are the essentialbuilding blocks to accomplishing the U.S. Department of Energy's mission. Further, theConsumer Energy Alliance has indicated, STEM education is a must for the next generation ofenergy workers as a STEM bachelor's degree nearly doubles the likelihood of working in theenergy industry. Currently, the energy industry is facing three key workforce challenges: (i)technical and soft skills gap, (ii) lack of awareness of job opportunities, and (iii)underrepresentation of minorities and women. Bringing together bright minds to attack a design problem functionallyand systematically can test the boundaries of all team members. “For some professionally, vocationally, or technically oriented careers, curricula delivered in higher educationestablishments may focus on teaching material related to a single discipline. By contrast, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary teaching (MITT) results in improvedaffective and cognitive learning and critical thinking, offering learners/students the opportunityto obtain a broad general knowledge base” Pooley, Alison and Wanigarathna, Nadeeshani(2016).KeywordsShipping

to attempt to solve the problem. To addressthis hesitancy, the first problem set is completed together and graded for participation. In Week 1, the simple series circuit shown in Figure 1 is introduced. The circuit is a model forthe VAWT. The main components of the VAWT are the magnets attached to a rotor and the wirecoils in the stationary base. As wind is caught in the blades, the rotor spins the magnets therebyapplying a changing magnetic field to the coils. The circuit is a simplification showing how thepeak generator voltage and therefore, the peak load voltage and dissipated power, can bepredicted. The problem is solved in steps, beginning with the dimensions and units for resistance, current, voltage, and power. light of technological changes, industrieshave been undergoing significant organizational restructuring, and academic institutions can playa part in training a technologically advanced workforce. To address how the industry might bemore successful with this new wave of innovation, human resource competencies have beenidentified by studies for managers [3], workers [4], and as integrated social systems [2, 5].Elsewhere we have observed that studies on workforce competencies are not cohesive [1], but itis generally acknowledged that avant garde systems require an overhaul of previous emotionaland social competencies in order to prevent the stress, anxiety, and fatigue that comes along withhuman-robot interaction [6]. Engineering Technology degree was intentionallydesigned to be general and provide flexibility through multiple interdisciplinary opportunities. The B.S. Engineering Technology degree consists of a manufacturing-focused engineeringtechnology core plus two areas of emphasis, selected from a current list of five areas ofemphasis. Students have significant flexibility within this general program to focus theireducation toward specific career goals.Because of the diverse opportunities
