department initiated an independent research propositioncourse for all first year PhD candidates. Student performance in this spring semesterthree unit course was treated as a graduate qualifier exam, and both students and facultyhave been supportive of this requirement, as summarized earlier1. Over the last decade, our first year approach to research education hasbroadened. Peter Kilpatrick added a one unit fall course, Introduction to Research, aprofessional development course including research ethics, presentations, andpublications.
