conversation about whether it was more important to have the appropriateresults or to have “good” writing, with one participant stating that the results do not have anymeaning without the appropriate context that can only be provided in written reports. Without the writing, the results have no meaning and no context. So the results by themselves just presented in data tables and graphs and charts and equations I think are insufficient because without context and conclusions drawn from the data the meaning is not successfully communicated. The new faculty stated that they assigned lab reports because they were expected to. They alsounanimously expressed concerns about grading the written portion of the reports because theyhave no

Thebenefits and challenges that new faculty experienced participating in this program are presentedwith the intention of guiding new faculty members who may be interested in implementingsimilar programs. 1. Introduction Engineering graduates remain in demand in the United States workforce and institutes ofhigher education continue to strive to improve educational practice and experience forengineering students. Issues related to student retention, persistence and academic successremain important topics of discussion and research within engineering education communities.Prioritization of diversity, equity and inclusion also prompts us to pay special

]. Despite this support, the path to formally engage in EER on a substantial level isnot trivial. In this paper, the authors present challenges and lessons learned based on their ownexperiences, as well as specific recommendations for prospective engineering educationresearchers. Three of the authors are civil engineering faculty new to EER, while one author isan established social science researcher and mentor to the engineering faculty.2. Research contextIn the sections that follows, the experiences associated with initiating and undertaking EER arediscussed in the context of the authors' recent grant funding in Table 1. Two of the projects arestill gaining traction in Year 1, while one project has entered Year 2.Table 1. Summary of the authors

and is foundational to the success of students. At the beginning of each quarter, new faculty should make it a point to discuss the diversity andinclusion statement with students during the first lecture and incorporate it into all course syllabi.Students should be actively encouraged to voice their thoughts or reach out to faculty membersindividually if they encounter any discomfort or concerns. New faculty member can try to engagein their classes to create a more inclusive environment by utilizing the following methods: • Generate a photo roster of all students, incorporating their preferred pronouns to respect individual identities. • Distribute an introductory questionnaire during the initial lecture includes a query about

limited teaching resources [2], [3], [4], [5].The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated these issues and added more with the need foronline and remote learning experiences that still provide students with the benefits ofexperiential learning [6], [7], [8]. Additionally, teaching a laboratory course for the first time canbe daunting for both new and experienced faculty. In the spring of 2021, we recognized that the pandemic had forced changes in lab and designcourses and that we as faculty had been largely making these changes in isolation. However, wealso know that collaboration increases creativity and outcomes in design. It was discovered thatwe all faced many of the same challenges despite teaching very different courses and labs. Therefore, in

calculating gradesmade them more difficult to understand, not easier. For example, if a student receives one4, two 3's, and one 2 on a four-standard assignment, the average grade is 3, which is a B.However, the percent grade is 4+3+3+2=12, then 12/16=0.75, resulting in a C grade. Thestudent notices a C in the grade book and becomes concerned about their grade, but it isincorrect. Automatic letter grades were turned off in Canvas, but even if students knew the scaleis different than traditional, it did not help that the student’s immediate reaction to seeing a 75 andremembering that they have a B, and not a C. Part of the purpose of the new grading is to make itless stressful not more, so this solution was not utilized. Furthermore, rather than

example calculations) and less on conceptual understanding (viathe Student Board Notes).Faculty PerspectiveBoth Group Note and Student Board Note reading assignments in upper-level courses largelydepend on the instructor creating prompts to direct student attention to specific content in thetext. While this requires a significant instructor time to prepare, once complete, faculty can re-use the prompts across multiple years so long as they use the same textbook. The process ofprompt creation also supports new faculty familiarizing themselves with the textbook content.Alternatively, new faculty with lecture-level learning objectives may direct students to generatenotes for each learning objective ensuring alignment between notes and class

Wellness Days where they could be absent from class. Students taking aWellness Day could make up work from that day with no penalties. During an end-of-the-yeardepartment retreat in Spring 2023, concern was expressed by other faculty that students woulduse the extra time provided by relaxed homework deadlines and Wellness Days to copy from thesolutions or other students. There was also concern that recorded lectures would lead to lowattendance. These concerns prompted the present work.Research Questions and MethodsThis study sought to answer the following questions: 1. Was there a measurable difference in grades between work turned in on time and work turned in late? 2. If so, did the difference indicate an advantage for the students who

also point out the variation among those who educate in engineering (tenured/tenure-trackfaculty, graduate students, and contingent/adjunct faculty), which is not always acknowledged.By not paying attention to such variation, the impact of work done in engineering educationresearch may be limited. In an effort to illuminate these variations, we report on research thatexplores some details of the educator experience. In this paper we ask: what does it look like tobe an educator working to adapt an existing curriculum for a new term, in our case a curriculumpreviously taught in Autumn 2021 and adapted for use in Winter 2022? Broadly, the curriculumwas a 10-week seminar titled Dear Design: Defining Your Ideal Design Signature where

disorder at some point in theirlives; with females affected more than males (about 1.5:1) [1]. In 2017, 61% of college studentsseeking counseling services listed anxiety as the most frequent issue they were facing, and about23% said it was the problem causing them the most concern (Center for College Mental Health atPenn State [2]). Anxiety can impact physical, cognitive and emotional health, impacting howstudents perform in their classes and consequently in their careers. For college students, anxiety is frequently manifested in relation to exams—it is estimated that10-40% of students are affected by test anxiety. Test anxiety can impact motivation andacademic achievement and lead to higher rates of alcohol use and leaving college without adegree

pedagogicalpurposes. An important role of lab reports, as a mode of technical communication, is to providean opportunity for students to think and act in a different capacity than just learners. Preparing alab report allows the student to assume the role of a professional engineer, and practice elementssuch as systematically analyzing technical issues and providing different lines of reasoning. However, students’ perception of lab report is rarely a hypothetical professional technicalcommunication; rather, it is just another class assignment with the instructor as the audience(Herrington, 1985). This mindset often manifests itself as what is known as the “informationdump”. When a student practices information dump, they present their experimental findings in
