One significantdrawback to these systems is the reliance on a single correct answer that can’t capture how astudent went about solving the problem. As a formative assessment tool, auto-graded homeworkdoes not lend itself to providing instructors with insight on what concepts their students aregrasping well, and what they may be struggling with. [17]. The study utilized five subscales from the Motivated Strategies for LearningQuestionnaire (MSLQ) to assess undergraduate students' motivation to learn civil engineeringconcepts. The subscales were intrinsic goal orientation (IGO), extrinsic goal orientation(EGO), task value (TV), expectancy component (EC), and test anxiety (TA). The MSLQ hasa 7-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (Not true of me) to 7 (Very true of me) and covers thethree theoretical components of motivation, namely, value beliefs, expectancy, and affect[18].
