Due to thechallenging nature of the topics, ME 4061 had become a bottleneck course for many students. In recent years, the mechanical engineering program at Cal State LA has experienced explosivegrowth in undergraduate enrollment, growing from 234 students in Fall 2007 to 890 students inFall 20181,2. This led to increases in class size and limited student interactions with faculty3.Furthermore, the majority of mechanical engineering students at Cal State LA come fromsocioeconomically disadvantaged families and are often the first in their families to attendcollege. Many hold part-time or full-time jobs to support their education and family. Theircomplex lives result in suboptimal learning environments and

problems, such as that in Figure 2, would havedifficulty solving engineering problems, but the impact is more basic than that. Engineeringprofessors tend to use examples employing tables, charts, graphs, and other non-textual means ofcommunication that may not be understood by a large fraction of the class. As a result, whatappears to be students’ misunderstanding of the course content may actually be students’misunderstanding of the communications[18]. This is exacerbated when a student is less familiarwith the language[19]. Finally, this breakdown in communications introduces uncertainty inassessment. Engineering professors want students to know how to design bridges that do not falldown, but it is not possible to know whether students have that

]. STEM higher education for example has been described as historically designed toattract white, cis-gender, able bodied, white, Christian males [5]. Consequently, “White people, men, straight people, cis-gendered people, able-bodied people, with settler mindsets, aresystematically powerful people in engineering” (p. 450) [41]. White men, for example, oftenexperience an insulated segregated world where white privilege or supremacy is neverchallenged, racism is unacknowledged, or ignored, and white solidarity works against socialjustice [42], [43]. Thus, interventions (e.g., bridge programs) aimed to increase minoritizedparticipation are then seen as unnecessary or even unfair to white students [6]. Another elementof whiteness is the exclusion of

studentperformance and engagement, particularly in skill-intensive disciplines. Alshammari exploredthe effects of video-based microlearning on programming skills and technology acceptanceamong intermediate school students [13]. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study revealedthat microlearning improved programming skills and increased technology acceptance whencompared to traditional instruction. These findings highlight the effectiveness of concise andstructured video content in achieving specific learning objectives.Similarly, Zhu examined the impact of short video segments in a flipped engineering course. Thestudy found that shorter videos (5–8 minutes) increased video viewing time by 24.7% andimproved final exam scores by 9%, compared to longer

As aresult, teamwork has become very common in engineering and technology programs. Theaccreditation boards, such as the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET),also require evidences that students are actually acquiring teamwork skills. However, theassessment of teamwork skills like all professional skills is challenging. Unlike technical skills, which can
