enginetemperature readings or low oil pressure readings at the right time can help avert a major enginefailure.6.0 Students ParticipationThe PNW student organization Formula SAE, has more than 40 members. They are primarilymechanical and technology engineering students, some of whom are known to remain on campuswell past 3:30 a.m. in the laboratory, preparing for a competition that already has paid hugedividends for several of them. Despite carrying full course loads, club president and otherFormula SAE members frequently spend 60+-hour per week working to turn their dream into areality. That is when the car they have designed and assembled competes in Formula SAE at theMichigan International Speedway outside Detroit. The PNW students’ car is powered by

. Search phrases were based on the bigideas instead. Examples include “jigs and fixtures,” and “mass customization.” This resulted in aset of 3 books (not technically textbooks) for a total of about $75 that together cover the contentsof the course. For the course on Electronics Technology the textbooks tended to be completely hands-onelectronics appropriate for a technician or hobbyist level or very mathematical at an engineeringlevel. Using the enduring understandings as search phrases, i.e. “simple circuits,” “generators,”and “circuit diagram,” rather than “electronics technology,” eventually resulted in thedevelopment of a customized textbook produced by a major publishing company. It should also be noted that one of the characteristics of the

thinking.Analysis GuidanceThe errors in planar projections were coded for quantitative analysis. We focused on the fivetypes of common misconceptions identified by Krause and Waters: missing atoms, extra atoms, displaced atoms, atoms not touching where they should (“should touch”), and atoms touchingwhere they should not (“should not touch”) [9]. An analysis instruction sheet was created toconsistently categorize student work among researchers and institutions. The instructions containexamples of correct answers, examples of the misconceptions, and guidelines for consistentlycoding borderline or ambiguous cases. For example, the 9 locations where atoms should touch onthe FCC (111) plane can be divided into 6 “external adjacencies” and 3internal

Instead of discussing our analysis methods in the abstract, we present the analysis in greatdetail (especially in the first segment of the analysis) so that the reader can evaluate ourinterpretations. For the purpose of this paper, we selected four segments to support our claimsempirically. A brief description of these segments are presented in Table 1.Table 1.
