BlackCollege and University (HBCU) is being conducted to establish baselines for the mental modelsof students and their tolerance to ambiguity. The modified Rydell-Rosen questionnaire was usedto understand undergraduate students’ ambiguity tolerance. Analysis of cross-sectional datacollected indicates little change in tolerance of ambiguity of undergraduate students with timespent in college. This research is supported by NSF Grant# 1832041.IntroductionThe typical learning environment, and assessment of learning dominant in K-16 educationpromotes a dualistic understanding of the problem space. Students look for the ‘right’ answer, orthe answer the teacher is expecting. Obviously, such learning is rarely applicable to real-lifesituations which are much

Interest in STEM fields willbe assessed through a questionnaire about how the course may have impacted their choice ofpotential career fields. These items will guide us in future iterations of the course and expansionof our efforts into Chemistry and a combined Physics/Calculus course in the future. To implement the online physics course we utilized several platforms, databases, andonline tools. Utilizing the below tools our online environment resembled that which we allexperience today with Individual picture tiles, shared screens, videos and more. The followingtools allowed us to effectively organize, engage, and allow for

designed for writing, recognizes the different backgroundsof students and allows grading on completion and self-guided work. The project courses are partnering with local afterschool programs, an organic farm, and a localnative community to design projects in the first two years. In the afterschool program, universitystudents will co-design games with elementary students. At the farm, the farm managers haveasked us to explore the water balance - while students design water sensors and model the watersystem. This provides opportunities for students to do real-world projects, while also learningabout social and environmental justice. In our physics for engineers course, students have a combination of traditional labs andmulti-week projects. disrespectful and disruptive behavior. This paper describes thetraining program and early results. There are promising signs of the applicability of MIconversations to address not only problem behavior and engineering culture, but also dishonestpractice, stereotype threat, academic progress, academic study skills, team dynamics and studyhabits. Given these promising early results discussion is underway with the University aboutexpanding the program further.1 IntroductionEvery year universities admit hundreds to thousands of new engineering students to theirengineering programs. All come in with different views of the world and pre-conceptions of howto behave as an engineering student. Problematic and unwanted attitudes and behavior on campusinclude

abroad programshas grown over the last 25 years, yet there is still a need for more empiricalresearch studies that provide a better understanding of study abroad as a highimpact practice for the academic and professional success of engineering students. While the MU College of Engineering has been able to successfully offer global experientiallearning opportunities for students for almost a decade, there is still a need to betterexpose students to real world engineering problems and humanitarian engineering service. One of the most recent contributions to global experiential learning research comesfrom Purdue University’s Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessmentand Research (CILMAR) new study, which confirms more intercultural

offer a uniqueopportunity to understand participatory design in displacement. Second, we propose a model tore-center displaced learners as part of the solution in displacement. Third, we describe analternative pathway where students have an opportunity to develop their ideas and transformtheir projects into real-world products. Fourth, we propose a pedagogy where local facilitatorshelp to co-construct and co-implement the course so that they feel a sense of ownership andcommitment with course success. Specifically, it is important to engage policymakers and local stakeholders on futureinitiatives in order to enable policies that allow students to effectively find resources andmaterials needed to implement their ideas in long-term

Faculty arealso increasingly required to include a diversity statement in research grant applications. Forexample, the National Science Foundation’s Computer & Information Science and Engineering(CISE) division has recently begun to encourage grant applicants to include a “broadeningparticipation plan” in their

Adults, who have served in the U.S. military, are coming back to higher education at a rapid rate after serving in recent wars, much like thereturn to higher education after World War II [21]. It is projected that veterans will earn 100,000degrees per year that are funded by the G.I. Bill [24]. Since the reenactment of the G.I. Bill in2008, over 500,000 veterans have earned postsecondary degrees or certificates, 14% of which arein STEM fields, have higher average GPAs than traditional students (3.35 vs. 2.94), and 80% ofthem are over 25 years old [24].Student veterans mirror many of the andragogical aspects

For the purpose of the selection of thecases, an initial survey will be distributed. The survey not only serves as a screening measure butalso is used as a major source of data on demographic information, quality of relationships, communication patterns, and visions about research collaboration. The primary source of datacollection is one-on-one interviews with collaborative pairs. One potential body of research that can inform this study-- and similar studies
