The theory of recollection holds that learning is not the process of knowledge comingfrom the outside into the mind, but rather the recovering of something an individual has alwayspossessed but which was previously unrecognized. The review of recollection that follows islargely based on Jones’s dissertation [12]. Plato explores recollection in three dialogs – theMeno, the Phaedo, and the Phaedrus. While there has been muchdiscussion of other aspects of engineering education, including the incorporation into thecurriculum of more “soft-skills”, class delivery modes, and capstone design project requirements,there has not been much discussion of the appropriate role for technical electives. This issomewhat surprising considering the desire of many programs and universities to reduce thenumber of credits required for an engineering degree in an effort to increase graduation rates,reduce time-to-graduation, and decrease student debt loads.
