is a subset of a project focused on investigating minoritized engineeringundergraduate students at a large, public, land-grant university in the Midwest. Through detailed,hour-long, semi-structured interviews, participants shared their experiences as minoritizedengineering students, especially as their experiences relate to their own mental health. This paperspecifically explores the narratives of two participants, illustrating the contrast in perspectives ofa first-year and fourth-year first-generation student. This paper underscores the importance ofcontinual dialogue with first-generation students, emphasizing that true inclusivity in engineeringeducation extends beyond mere integration; it demands sustained understanding and

need for physical/in person maintenance. Although Smart grids and microgrids have many benefitsto their deployment including remote operation, there are considerations that must be made. Thisincludes the conversion of exiting grid systems or the introduction of new grid infrastructure, which canbe an expensive and extensive project to undertake. From the investigations, it is suggested that themost effective approach to the implementation of smart grids and microgrids is at alocalized/community level. The localized grid approach is best to serve an intended community and tomanage cost over time; it will also minimize the strain on renewable resources and reduce the carbonfootprint. The efficiency of the system was measured alongwith the efficiency, illuminance, and heat dissipation of the individual light bulbs. The usefulnessof the project was justified by the results from the surveyed undergraduate students. According tothe survey result, more than 55% of the students did not have any prior experience in seeing andmeasuring light intensity, heat dissipation, and efficiency. These pedagogies have proven to be more effective than thetraditional “chalk-and-talk” passive lecture methods, and include challenge-based learning (e.g.,problem-based learning, project-based learning, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning [1])and a multitude of active/collaborative techniques (e.g., think-pair-share, quick think, jigsaw, andgallery walk). All of these learning methods excel in student learning of content as well as avariety of process skills such as critical thinking

They feel free to dispute each other and often correct each other as well. They engage themselves in long but seemingly constructive discussions and debates. That is,they teach each other and learn from each other at the same time. In fact, students in somesituations are more receptive to new concepts and ideas if they are introduced by their peersinstead of their instructor. All of these observations prove that students have the capabilities andwilling to learn from each other, and equally importantly, they have a great potential to teacheach other as well. The above teaching and learning interaction
