(HBCU) since the project began in 2019. The study compares the studentswho participated in ECP, using various measures of engagement, motivation, cognitive processes,and collaborative learning experiences between spring 2022 and fall 2023. A well-developed andvalidated instrument, the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), was adoptedfor this study, as well as a self-developed questionnaire to measure students’ engagement duringthe implementation of pedagogy. The study contributes to the current understanding of the efficacyof ECP in enhancing learning outcomes. The study found a sustained level of cognitivedevelopment and motivation among the students, but there was a decline in peer learning andcollaboration. It provides

explore how SDL, andspecific prompts, could present in stories as components of the construct of empathy. Zaki’smodel (2019) guided our investigation, a framework for empathy that considers its emotional,cognitive, and action-focused aspects. In our study, we sought to answer the following researchquestions (RQs): • RQ1: How do unique story prompts elicit different aspects of empathy from Zaki’s model, including sharing, thinking about, and caring about others? • RQ2: How do biomedical engineering students self-perceptions of empathy correspond to external evaluations of empathy from stories shared?We elaborate further on Zaki’s model and empathy in Section 2. The inclusion of child participantperspectives from 15 families provides diverse data for the interpretation of narrow units ofanalysis (i.e., statements, phrases) and aggregation into broader units (i.e., themes, meanings)[44].ContextThis study is part of a larger grant project, began in 2019, working in partnership with familiesand community members to develop, implement, and refine an out-of-school elementaryengineering program. [16] While the specific learning tools and instructionaltechniques in the LLL course series evolved somewhat over time, its core course structure,objectives and components remained stable. A summary of the objectives and student learningoutcomes, as originally conceived, for each of the LLL course series segments is provided here: Leveraging Leadership for a Lifetime I (ETLS 550) (offered as the initial course in the MSTM program). This course provides a comprehensive orientation to the newly accepted student
