While students learn that the basics of product planning and the innovation cycle thatestablishes incumbent and emerging companies in the marketplace, the intent is to have studentunderstand that these downstream market influences greatly influence the upstream materialsupply and value chains of a materials producer.Factors and Policies Influencing Materials InnovationMaterials do not move easily from invention to the marketplace and thus can take severaldecades.1 Furthermore, once in use, a technological innovation is subject to diffusion pressuresas copies or similar competing products
